Extractions: And Hate MS-NBC Sports by Michael Peirce When the ninth inning roles around, its time to hold an advantage, or start a rally. Three hitters up and three hitters down, which happens a lot with Rocker, can be critical. He strikes out well over one hitter per inning pitched. He looks like a guy you could sit next to in a pub and have a nice chat. Although, he might challenge you to arm wrestle! It is very obvious indeed why Atlanta fans like Rocker. What is not as obvious is why everybody with a word processor and a liberal bent has been outdoing each other to damn Rocker and the Atlanta fans as a very sinister group indeed. Its astonishing. Atlanta is not heaven on earth, but we didnt need Rudy Giulianis storm troops to be able to walk our streets. We are a friendly town. Yes we carry guns, many of us do that. But dont worry, unlike Northern guns ours do not jump up and start firing on their own. That apparently happens a lot in New York, where honest taxpayers are unarmed, and strangely enough, still get shot now and then. Compare our shootings in Atlanta to those in any other city, and you ll find that one, there are not that many, and two: the loser in the gunfight is not always the crime victim. Heh heh.
Extractions: Rocker is an outspoken firebrand with a propensity to say dumb things. His diatribes often remind me of those of Ted Turner. However, unlike media mogul Turner, John Rocker is nothing more than one of thousands of professional baseball players and his opinions merely reflect his intellectual and emotional capacity.

Another example of a poor role model is Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Bobby Chouinard. He is charged with putting a loaded gun to his wife's head during an argument on Christmas. We can also examine Dennis Rodman's numerous questionable antics, the wife beating charges against Wil Cordero and the murder charges against Rae Carruth. There is never a shortage of athletes acting like less than ideal citizens. Rocker needs to understand that he is in the public eye. When he decided to become a baseball player, he was well aware that he would be in the spotlight and would have to act appropriately.

Extractions: Account Signup Where Is the Left in John Rocker's Hour of Need? By Brian Carnell Thursday, January 13, 2000 The only thing The Nation did was one of Calvin Trillin's annoying little poems about Rocker. It is interesting how the people who usually whine and moan whenever employers fire or discipline employees for their political or social beliefs disappear when the discipline is directed at people who hold views diametrically opposed to the Left. Imagine, for example, that Rocker in his Sports Illustrated interview had decided to emulate NBA player Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf and suggested he no longer wanted to appear on the field during the singing of the national anthem, and as a result Bud Selig had ordered psychological testing for Rocker. Is there really any doubt that magazines like The Nation would immediately run to Rocker's defense and talk about the horrors of corporate suppression of free speech (in fact Abdul-Rauf had many left-liberal defenders when the NBA suspended him). Instead the general consensus seems to be that Major League Baseball is doing a good thing by disciplining Rocker for his private conversation with a reporter during baseball's off-season. That's fine, but remember folks that you can't have it both ways. You can't applaud baseball for taking action against Rocker and then turn around and say an employer who might discipline or fire a worker because of his Left views and activism is overstepping the bounds of the employer-employee relationship.

I would urge the league as punishment to have the Braves trade John Rocker to the Mets and give him the choice of retiring as he said he would if traded to New York or playing there and learning from New Yorkers about the positives other cultures contribute in an advanced society. Let him choose his punishment, retire or live and play in New York. That would be great. Rocker in a Mets uniform and the Mets fans having to throw their batteries somewhere else as they cheer for the man they love to hate. Now that is poetic justice. Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director, issued the following statement: John Rockers racist and anti-gay comments about New York Citys diverse population, many whom are immigrants or of immigrant backgrounds, are outrageous and should be swiftly and strongly condemned by Major League Baseball. They have no place in our beloved national pastime, which epitomizes the ideal of fair play and today is a mirror of our society, with players from all backgrounds. John Rocker may be tall on the mound, but his comments lower him into the sewer. Everyone connected to the game, especially his Atlanta Braves teammates and management should soundly condemn him.

THURSDAY, MARCH 1, 2000 By RANDY SAMUELSON As many know, Atlanta Braves pitcher John Rocker made several controversial remarks about New York City in a December Sports Illustrated interview. His comments, dealing with racial issues, consisted of observations about certain subpopulations in New York City. For example, he commented about Times Squares Puerto Ricans and Cubans inability to speak English and the queers with AIDS on the Number 7 train to Shea Stadium. His opinions sent shock-waves through Major League Baseball and the Atlanta Braves organization, reviving racial issues that Major League Baseball has long tried to suppress. Like any other American, John Rocker has the right to speak his mind on any issue he wishes and to hold any opinion he so desires. Housed in the First Amendment, these free speech rights are the same rights liberals love to reference regarding art, journalism, and speech. Perhaps the way he phrased his comments could have been more tactful, but he broke no law by saying them.

Too bad white Atlanta Braves relief pitcher John Rocker did not consult with O'Sullivan before Rocker shot his mouth off. In a recent issue of "Sports Illustrated," John Rocker treats us to a view of his Archie Bunker-esque thinking. An important member of the Braves team that beat the New York Mets in the playoffs, Rocker offered his thoughts on the Big Apple, "Imagine having to take the [Number] 7 train to the ballpark, looking like you're [riding through] Beirut next to some kid with purple hair next to some queer with AIDS right next to some dude who just got out of jail for the fourth time right next to some 20-year-old mom with four kids." About New York, Rocker said, "The biggest thing I don't like about New York are the foreigners. I'm not a very big fan of foreigners. You can walk an entire block in Times Square and not hear anybody speaking English. Asians and Koreans and Vietnamese and Indians and Russians and Spanish people and everything up there. Extractions: The Wall Street Journal By Sally Satel Baseball's latest bad boy is Atlanta Braves pitcher John Rocker. Last month he spoke disparagingly of foreigners, homosexuals and a black teammate in Sports Illustrated, and now there are cries that he should be dumped. But before Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig decides what to do with Mr. Rocker, he wants to hear from the mental health profession. On Friday, the pitcher had his first mandatory evaluation with psychiatrists. Psychiatrists? What is our role in helping Mr. Selig reprimand Mr. Rocker? The commissioner should decide what behavior the sport finds unacceptable, devise a sanction and implement it. Period. By effectively saying that anyone who uses bigoted language is mentally ill, Mr. Selig (who decided in cooperation with the Players Association to obtain the evaluation) is medicalizing behavior that we rightly object to on moral grounds. By asking psychiatrists to help him reprimand Mr. Rocker, Mr. Selig is hiding behind our couch. I cannot help suspect that, deep down, Mr. Selig and Company know that sending the 25-year-old Mr. Rocker to the shrink is an empty gesture. Perhaps they figure that a needless trip to the psychiatrist will be the first in a longer series of punitive steps. But the gesture still sends a disturbing message to young baseball fans: Offensive behavior is actually a deep pathology, one that individuals cannot control.
