On The John Rocker Trade | BaseballLibrary.com Trading players from one team to another is not unusual; indeed, it is a routineoccurrence in the business of baseball. But, john rocker is a special case http://www.pubdim.net/baseballlibrary/submit/Person_Sam7.stm
Extractions: John Rocker has been traded from the Atlanta Braves to the Cleveland Indians , an event that has not been without a great deal of attention. Trading players from one team to another is not unusual; indeed, it is a routine occurrence in the business of baseball. But, John Rocker is a special case, and one wonders if the respective teams knew what was at issue. Rocker is at best grossly immature, and at worst, he is a certifiable bigot whose on- and off-the-field antics and utterances are despicable. Certainly, he is considerably less than a wholesome representative for major league baseball. Not surprisingly, both teams made light of his personality and the extreme negativism he brings. They would have you believe that the trade helped both teams. Perhaps so, but the belief here is that it had become necessary to move Rocker out of Atlanta. Whether he brings his act to Cleveland or straightens out remains to be seen. Let us remember just a couple of years ago Rocker was fined and suspended by major league baseball for inappropriate remarks and actions. His comments in New York last week following a game with the Yankees were consistent with what Rocker is all about.

Extractions: Before and after his hate-filled diatribe against the ethnic and cultural polyglot of New York City turned him into Public Enemy Number One, John Rocker was not well liked. Opposing batters, who looked alternately foolish and cowed while flailing against the explosive offerings of the Braves closer, wished that he would just stay in the bullpen. His most vocal critics were Met fans, whose rancorous war of words with the impolitic southpaw spawned his infamous Sports Illustrated rant. Even Rockers own teammates soured on his overgrown frat-boy act, prompting Atlanta to deal away the most coveted commodity in baseball a young, hard-throwing left-hander with unlimited potential.

"It sounds crazy, but if John Rocker is a crazy bigot, then it's a federal crime to discriminate against him in any way," said Steve Dasbach, the party's national director. "Even more amazing, if John Rocker is crazy, then Major League Baseball must make 'reasonable accommodations' for his prejudices which could include keeping foreigners and homosexuals away from him so he can continue to pitch."

Extractions: The fans in New York seem to love him. Rocker has been the focus of hatred from New York Mets fans since September, when he said he enjoyed beating the team. During the playoffs, he said Mets fans insulted his mother and threw batteries at him. Tony Braswell, executive director of AID Atlanta, said he attended the playoff game in New York and was shocked by the rude behavior of Mets fans. Rocker also attacked New York's famous diversity: "The biggest thing I don't like about New York are the foreigners. I'm not a very big fan of foreigners," he said. "You can walk an entire block in Times Square and not hear anybody speaking English. .... How the hell did they get into this country?" As for the Mets fans, "To hell with Mets fans, they're stupid," Rocker told the media. "We beat them 20 (games) out of 26 and they still say we suck. If we suck, how come they can't beat us? They're a tired act." John's father, Jake Rocker, also had some comments for those oh so polite New York fans. "The fans yell what they are going to do to your daughter, your mother, your wife," Jake says, and lists the security precautions taken at Shea Stadium for the Braves' visit: Five snipers on the roof, 500 extra security officers, two each assigned only to his son and Chipper Jones. "You didn't see that at Turner Field Tuesday," Jake says. "I went to St. Louis for three games wearing my Braves cap. (The Braves) beat them three games. I did not hear one word of profanity at Busch Stadium." "John's been intense since he was seven, he never came home to an empty house, he's active in the church and he's not a mean-spirited person," says his father Jake Rocker from behind his desk at the Georgia Farm Bureau Insurance Company where he is the assistant general manager.

Extractions: Atlanta Braves closer John Rocker didn't make too many friends in New York during the playoffs. On a recent Up Close with Gary Miller, Rocker said New York fans should not take him so seriously. John Rocker does not like to hide his enthusiasm on the mound. "I don't really understand why my opinion of somebody else is so darn important, but a lot of Mets fans took it really personally," said Rocker. "They sit there and say, quite frankly, the most vulgar things I have ever heard in my life about me, and their opinion doesn't bother me a bit, why does my opinion of them bother them so darn much?" An edited transcript of Rocker's conversation follows.
Extractions: Had John Rocker either pitched well or behaved well these last two months, he would still be with the Atlanta Braves right now. But you don't need to consult either the Elias Sports Bureau or Miss Manners to know he went 0-for-2 on both counts. So now, if Rocker is ever going to pitch for the Braves again if he's ever going to pitch anywhere in the big leagues again, for that matter his life is no longer a multiple-choice question. Most of us recognize that there are moments in life to take a step backward and call off the cavalry. Had John Rocker done that at any time these last few months, he'd have been far better off today. "We're now beyond 'either-or' in this situation," says one Braves source. "For him to come back here, he's got to do both pitch well

John Rocker Hypocrisy When Major League baseball first responded to john rocker's comments, no one knewfor sure if they were truly concerned with the issues rocker brought up. http://members.aol.com/truth899/johnrocker.html
Extractions: The John Rocker Hypocrisy and Springfield College September 20, 2000 Commentary Congratulations are due to the Atlanta Braves and to all of Major League Baseball. They received a wonderful opportunity when John Rocker's racist, homophobic and xenophobic words were printed in Sports Illustrated, and they took advantage of it. The baseball industry wasted no time in responding. MLB Commissioner Bud Selig said that Rocker's remarks "were reprehensible and completely inexcusable." Braves President Stan Kasten added "if the incident had occurred during the season Rocker would have been suspended immediately." Rocker's comments made national news, and so did baseball's response. The league made it clear that it would not stand for intolerance. Why do the Braves and the MLB deserve to be congratulated? Because they did an excellent job of making people believe they actually care about ending bigotry and promoting diversity.

Extractions: March 1 2000: John Rocker: Respectable? OK, I just had to send this to the Sporting News "Fan's View" column today: So, John Rocker's suspension has been trimmed in half, and his fine cut from a whopping $20,000 to a paltry $500. But just because Rocker's official penalty has been lightened, doesn't mean his road to respectability is any easier. I was going to say "road BACK TO respectability," but let's face it, Rocker was not a respectable character before this. If he was, then he wouldn't have been in the situation of having batteries and harsh words thrown at him by New York fans. The question now is, can Rocker survive without his "bad boy" image? Was the pumped-up snorting bull act necessary for those 95 mph fastballs? Or can Rocker still deliver the goods on the field even while changing his attitude off it? Just imagine Rocker as an elder statesman of baseball, able to look back on a long and storied career and maybe even comment intelligently on the "mistakes" of his youth. Think it will happen? Only if John Rocker can change "in his heart"and in the minds of those watching. If Rocker wants to gain respectability now, there are three places he needs to repair relations.
John Rocker. Like Baseball Needed Something Like This. Yeah, this was exactly what baseball needed another big mouth likeJohn rocker to grace us with his opinion. rocker is http://www.eightballmagazine.com/diatribes/volume01/diatribes045/diatribes918-93
Extractions: Rocker is not an asshole for his lack of political correctness, he is an asshole for his lack of reasoning behind his positions For a single afternoon John Rocker forgot what it meant to be a public figure, a sports celebrity, he forgot he was a role module. He let himself forget while being interviewed for a national sports magazine. From a strictly monetary point of view, why would an athlete want to lower his marketing earning potential by essentially offending 90% of the audience that any company in our competitive economy needs in order to earn a profit? Its called endorsements. Its what made Michael Jordan worth more than his height each month in $1000 dollar bills. What single mothers doesnt by shoes? What, fat black monkey kids dont by Coca-Cola? Foreigners need to buy toothpaste too. Rocker is worthless now as his corporate endorsement power dries up as you read this article and he did it all to himself. From a monetary point of view what he said was moronic. John Rocker has opinions, and there's no way to sugarcoat them. They are politically incorrect, to say the least, and he likes to express them. I am not a fan of the political correct movement. Actually, I hate the term politically correct. Political correctness is not something that was created out of a higher sense of sensitivity for others, it was created as safe speech for businesses which could no longer afford to risk losing out on dollars that they need to compete because of bad press.

Extractions: W hy J ohn R ocker S ucks , N ew Y ork R ocks and O ther S implistic V iewpoints By Sean Lilly "Imagine having to take the 7 train to the ballpark, next to some queer " -John Rocker, to Sports Illustrated I really don't know why I still watch baseball or any other sport; most of the guys who are considered to be in their prime are about my age, which means they were old enough to be the very jocks who stuffed me into lockers in high school, knocked my books out of my six-megaton bookbag, and assumed I was gay. If only they hadn't caught me ass-fucking the point guard from the basketball team but that's another story. In any case, when you're an office temp by day and a stand-up comic who just about has to hand out free blowjobs to get stage time in half-empty basements on Sunday, you need something to provide you with joy in your life. Believing that wearing the same lucky shirt during every game of a six-game winning streak and screaming obscenities at a television actually helped a team from your native city win a game that doesn't affect the universe in any significant way can do just that. So it was vicarious yet satisfying excitement I felt when the Mets, the team I had foolishly grown up rooting for, pulled off a major trade for Mike Hampton, a desperately-needed left-handed ace for the starting rotation.
