What kind of courage-and politics-did it take? A line-up of leading scholars, activists and sports writers will join former Brooklyn Dodgers and other baseball stars at LIU/Brooklyn Campus, April 3-5, to discuss those questions and Robinson's social, political and athletic legacy. Jackie was the first African American to play major league baseball. He helped open the door to pro sports for other black athletes. February is Black History Month. This is Jackie Robinson's story. All-Around Athlete Jackie is a baseball legend. But growing up in Pasadena, California, he was an all-around athlete. He played baseball in high school and in college at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). But he also played football, basketball, and ran track. How good was he? Jackie was the first athlete at UCLA to play on four varsity teams. He was the school's best baseball player. On the basketball court, he led the Pacific Coast Conference in scoring twice. In track and field, he won a national championship in the long jump. He was named an All-America running back in football. Jackie decided to leave school in his senior year to help earn money for his family. But when World War II broke out, he joined the army. By the end of the war, he had earned the rank of Lieutenant.
