Nobody Loves Tony - Baseball Primer It'll be tough to go 4 full days without baseball. he should be, but I don't knowit tony the Genius will. Louis 0, San Francisco 0, 2 outs, Eduardo perez on 1st http://www.baseballprimer.com/articles/dszymborski_2002-10-15_0.shtml
Extractions: by Dan Szymborski Once again, Primer contributors and Primer readers got together during the game. Everyone had a fun time, with the possible exception of Tony LaRussa if he ever runs across this transcript. At the bottom of the page, check out the link to Chris Dial's scorecard in order to follow the action. : Cardinals are coming all the way back, baby! : It wouldn't bother me if they did, but TLR will figure out a way to screw it up. : So, I assume I'm the only guy in the sabermetric community rooting for the Cardinals? DSzymborsk : Robert Dudek, too. : Well, I'm sort of rooting for them - I don't want to see an All-WC series but TLR makes it very hard to root for them DSzymborsk : Brock Hanke is a Cards fan, too. vorosm: The Genius! : Most cardinals fans are caught in between because we hate TLR more than the rest of you. vorosm: LaRussa, not Brock. : You forgot the TM symbol on that, Voros : I was yelling at the TV last night when he left White in. DSzymborsk : You think it's hard rooting for the Cards because of TLR? I'm an Orioles fan.
Extractions: Savannah Morning News Can a team's fifth-best player be a Hall of Famer? Is that really enough? It just seems it used to take a little more than that to be considered among baseball's elite. Tony Perez was placed among the game's best ever this week, which was a big win for nice guys everywhere. But it was also another small loss for what is supposed to be the most special place in sports, another chip away at the prestige the phrase "Hall of Famer" has always held in baseball more than anywhere else. Perez's numbers say Hall of Fame. His identity as a ballplayer doesn't. You didn't get the impression that he was when you were watching him, and voters shouldn't have gotten it now, nine years after he was first eligible. Perez was never the guy you raced into the stadium to see, never the player who made the Reds go, never the guy the other pitcher started worrying about two innings before his turn in the order came. And that image, that impact on every game, makes a Hall of Famer as much home runs, Gold Gloves and championships do. Perez had more RBIs than Mickey Mantle and more hits than Ted Williams. But he never approached the level of eminence those two players defined. Mickey Mantle and Ted Williams, like most Hall of Famers, were idols. They were the players kids pretended to be in their rooms at night. Tony Perez was the guy who came after Pete Rose, Joe Morgan and Johnny Bench on the Big Red Machine both in batting order and order of prominence.
Tony Perez Is Not A Hall Of Famer 1. Was he ever regarded as the best player in baseball? tony perez NEVER won an MVP.He came close in 1970, where he finished 2nd behind teammate Johnny Bench. http://www.dickiethon.com/~rhoma/hof/perez.htm
Extractions: Tony Perez is not a Hall of Famer Note: This was written before the BBWAA decided to become the Statue of Liberty of the National Baseball Hall of Fame: "Give me your tired, your homeless, your huddled masses...." What does the Hall of Fame mean to you? Should the Hall of Fame should contain the best players in the game? Should we use statistics as a guide to help us evaluate the dominance of a player? Or should we induct players who have surpassed certain statistical milestones, rewarding longevity. Some fans think it's an "insult" if a certain player isn't indicted into the Hall of Fame. In reality, it's an honor to be indicted in the Hall of Fame. Many good players haven't been elected to the Hall of Fame. Some of the elections were political. Let's get past that. Let's make future elections based on a player's merit. Tony Perez collected 2732 hits, he hit 379 home runs, and he drove in 1,652 runs. Perez compiled good lifetime stats. Was he great? Did fans buy tickets to see Perez play? Did Perez dominate the game the way other stars like Reggie Jackson, Hank Aaron, and Roberto Clemente dominate the game? Was Perez as good as Harmon Killebrew, Willie McCovey, and Willie Stargell? Let's ask ourselves a series of questions to evaluate Tony Perez for the Hall of Fame. Players who pass this test are players who I think belong in the Hall of Fame.

Extractions: Born: February 22, 1934, at Bridgewater, South Dakota. Connie Mack and John McGraw With Anderson at the helm for nine seasons, the Reds won 863 games, four pennants, and won more than 90 games seven times. Spurred by a lineup that included Joe Morgan , Pete Rose, and Johnny Bench , the Big Red Machine averaged more than 100 wins per season from 1972 through 1976. Anderson guided the team to World Series victories in 1975, a dramatic, hard-fought win over the Red Sox; and 1976, a dominating sweep of the Yankees. After the 1978 season Anderson left the Reds. The next year he joined the Detroit Tigers in mid-season and picked up where he had left off, posting a winning record in each of his first 10 years with Detroit. In 1984 his inspired Tigers team, led by Jack Morris, Alan Trammell, and Lou Whitaker, defeated the San Diego Padres in the World Series. The key moment came in Game 5, when Kirk Gibson hit the series-winning home run off ace reliever Goose Gossage.
