Al Shank's Baseball Tidbits - Baseball Primer Al's baseball Tidbits WS Rotations edition (October 19, 2002). russ ortiz, Anaheimat home ANA true quality = .574, SF true quality = .601, prob(ANA) = .503 http://www.baseballprimer.com/tidbits/archives/00000083.shtml
Extractions: Al Shank's Baseball Tidbits History and Methods I've put together a description of some of the methods I use and the background behind my thoughts on baseball. Let me know if I've left anything out. Al's Baseball Tidbits - "WS Rotations" edition (October 19, 2002) Well, Mike Scioscia finally announced his rotation, and it wasn't the way I thought it would be. Neither was Dusty Baker's. So, the pitcher-specific odds I posted a few days ago are no longer valid (if they were, indeed, valid anyway). I was putting these things into a spreadsheet, but I finally took my World Series progarm that just used a "true quality" figure for each team and enhanced it to accept separate "true quality" figures for each game, based on who the starting pitcher for a team is. Just to review a little, I use a team's xRuns for their offensive figure; for their defensive figure, I use the starting pitcher's ratio of "pitcher-only" events allowed, times his xR/PA for those events (HR, BB, HBP, SO), then use the TEAM's xR/PA on balls in play for the rest. This reflects the strength or weakness of the pitcher and the fielding strength of the team. Those figures, plugged into the "Pythagenport" formula, yield a "true quality" W-L percentage for each game. The program then adds .015 to the true quality figure for the home team and deducts .015 from the away team and applies the formula that tells us what the probability is that a team with a .nnn winning percentage will beat a team with a .mmm winning percentage. The formula goes, if p and q are the two winning percentages:

Extractions: I was playing for the University of Oklahoma, and for the first time, I was alone. I had always had family around me. My mom and my grandparents raised me. I had my brother and my friends. We were always a close family. To this day, we kiss and hug every time we leave each other, even if it's just for a few hours, because we're family. I met Christian athletes at Oklahoma, and I asked questions. There was something about them that made me aware of an emptiness in my life. I went with them to Fellowship of Christian Athlete meetings, and I asked more questions, and learned more and more. And then I became saved. I received Jesus as my Lord and Savior.

The start matches their best start since the 1930 N.Y. Giants went 7-0 from opening day that year. The Giants had the game well under control till the eighth inning when San Diego tied it 4-4. Todd Worrell was brought in to get them out of a jam in the eighth. In the bottom of the eigth, Aurilia homored to put the Giants back on top. Bonds was walked and Alfonzo then hit a two run homer for added insurance.
