Duquette Firing prospects in baseball. Why haggle over a few thousand dollars with a top offensivetalent, when you are willing to give Frank Castillo and troy o'leary multi http://www.theinsidepitch.com/Duquette.html
Extractions: Why did the new Red Sox owners make their first order of business firing Dan Duquette? I'll give you 2 reasons: Duquette's inability to support his field manager and inability to develop a productive farm system. The new ownership would not except the manner in which Duquette handled the Jimy Williams/Carl Everett tift. And the new ownership is going to make developing the farm system one of, if not, it's top priority. The Red Sox, under Duquette, have chosen to ignore their farm system, (not signing draft picks and trading away pitching prospects), and rely on building the team through high priced free agents, trading for talent that hasn't developed yet, signing pitching rehab projects and signing international talent. Duquette's ventures in the Far East have been a flop. He gave relief pitcher Sang-Hoon Lee a $1.05 bonus, who can't get out of AAA. Sun-Woo Kim received a $1M bonus and he's a inconsistent fringe prospect. Jin Ho Cho was a complete bust and Tomo Ohka's minor league success didn't translate to success in the majors. The players drafted or signed internationally under Duquette that are on the projected 25 man roster that came up through the farm system are SS Nomar Garciaparra, 3B Shea Hillenbrand and P Casey Fossum. Wow 3 players! Nomar's terrific, but 3 players and Hillenbrand is one slump from a one way ticket to AAA and Fossum projects as a lefty specialist. Compare that to the Yankees who spend wildly on free agents but also produce their own talent; SS Derek Jeter, CF Bernie Williams, OF Shane Spencer, 2B Alfonso Soriano, C Jorge Posada, SP Andy Pettitte, closer Mariano Rivera, set up man Ramiro Mendoza and DH/1B Nick Johnson. OK so all of the Yankees didn't come up in the same time frame as Duquette's reign. Well if we include pre Duquette players as well...add in OF Trot Nixon for Boston. Still not even close to the Yankees farm system production.

PETERSBURG The Rays made a small deal Tuesday that could have a big payoff if outfielder Troy O'Leary returns to form. O'Leary, a regular the past seven seasons with Boston, agreed to terms on a minor-league contract with an invitation to spring training. The Rays also eliminated another potential arbitration case by signing Randy Winn to a one-year deal for $960,000. O'Leary, 32, was at his best in 1999, hitting .280 for the Red Sox with 28 home runs and 103 RBIs. During the 1996-2000 seasons, he averaged 19 homers and 83 RBIs. Last season, he dropped to a .240 average with 13 home runs and 50 RBIs. He has a career .276 average. "Troy is an experienced player and a good left-handed hitter, so this gives (manager) Hal McRae some added flexibility," general manager Chuck LaMar said. "Whether Troy fits in as a starting player, an extra player or if he makes the club is truly up to him."

What affect did it have on the team when you played the yankees. Did it make your homerun against Clemens on May 28 all the more special?

Extractions: SURPRISE, Ariz. Trying to convince Sammy Sosa to take a day off in the summer is a task few managers have taken on in recent years. But Dusty Baker loves a challenge, and on Monday he insisted he will try to get Sosa to recharge his batteries with fewer starts in right field. The talks have yet to get serious, but Sosa appears unwilling to budge. "I didn't say he was OK with it," Baker said. "I said we talked about it. There are some days as you get older, you don't want to admit it, but a day (off) here and there will sometimes increase your production more than playing every day. It's not even a physical day off. Basically, it's a mental day off." Sosa played from 156-162 games every year from 1997-2001. He missed 12 games last year, mostly because of an outfield collision with Mark Bellhorn that resulted in back and neck injuries. Previous managers had informed Sosa he could take a day off whenever he needed, but Sosa typically replied it wasn't necessary. He still feels strong enough to play every day at the age of 34.
