Fernandez is a 30-year-old non-roster pitcher with a non-predictable pitch. He has less than three weeks of major-league experience and more than one supervisor who is leery of his stuff. He has added a new pitch since last season and shed 25 pounds, but his status is still as shaky as a pup tent in a tornado. One of the reasons the knuckleball continues to hover close to extinction is that the pitch can be as hard to harness as it is to hit. Besides Fernandez, the only current major-league practitioners are Detroit's Steve Sparks and Boston's Tim Wakefield.

It looks like that will be true of the National League again this year, but both 1997 and 1998 look fairly dismal in the American. The top six players at the position are all from the senior circuit. Then, once you get past Robin Ventura and John Valentin (projected to take the place of the oft-injured Tim Naehring), the next-best AL third basemen are Joe Randa and Russ Davis, both of whom figure to be only average. Ken Caminiti, Chipper Jones, Bobby Bonilla, Scott Rolen and Vinny Castilla should all do well again. Compared to his peers, Castilla gets a great deal of benefit from Coors, so I've discounted his OPS by 7% in calculating runs (more on that in another column.) There were very few aberrant offensive peformances from third last year. Matt Williams' dropoff can be attributed to the distractions of his divorce and subsequent long-distance relationship with his son. Although his problems have been well publicized in the off-season, those of many other players aren't.

Derek Zumsteg If you know me, and research says you do, then you know one of my favorite subjects in baseball is money and how it gets spent. Every GM makes mistakes (even my hero, Houston GM Gerry Hunsicker, has Pete the Incaviligian on the roster), but the difference between Hunsicker and, say, Pat Gillick is that Hunsicker can assemble a team for half the budget that wins half as many more games. With that in mind, let's look at the current crop of free agent talent. I've skipped players like Jeff Bagwell that could be free agents but most likely will not; if I'm wrong, drop me sarcastic email . I'll be updating this regularly until next season, so there'll be time to fix everything. For today, content yourself with the position players; next week I'll get to the pitchers.

In addition to Amsterdam, the NYCBL consists of teams located in Alfred, Wellsville, Watertown, Geneva, Hornell, Newark, and Plattsburgh. Split into two divisions, an Eastern and a Western, the NYCBL is a member of the National Alliance of College Summer Baseball. The league is one of nine elite wood bat summer leagues that are sanctioned and governed by the NCAA and sponsored by Major League Baseball. To be eligible to play in the NYCBL, a player must have completed at least one year of college and must still have at least one year of playing eligibility remaining. He must also be enrolled full-time at a college or university. Beginning in early June, each team in the league will play a 40 game schedule, which will wind down at the end of July. The Mohawks, who were located in Schenectady prior to this year, won its lone championship in 1988 under then head coach, and current team owner/president Bob Bellizzi. They finished that season with a mark of 34-8. In 2002, Dave Fields, led the team to a regular season title but lost the deciding game of the championship series to the Hornell Dodgers. The Mohawks have finished with a .500 record or better in 14 of their 17 seasons. In addition, there have been over 40 former Mohawks who have signed professional baseball contracts, including Glen Barker (Saint Rose) of the Houston Astros, Valentino Pascucci (U. Of Oklahoma) of the Montreal Expos, and Tim Christman (Siena) of the Chicago Cubs.

Extractions: The attrition continued in the Reds' front office Wednesday. This time, though, the move was voluntary. Gary Hughes, a special assistant to general manager Jim Bowden since the 2000 season, has accepted a similar position with the Chicago Cubs. Hughes will work closely with Cubs general manager Jim Hendry, who along with former Florida Marlins manager John Boles is probably Hughes' closest friend in baseball. Moreover, Hughes' son, Sam, is an Atlanta-based scout for the Cubs. "The role will be similar, other than there probably won't be as much emphasis on player development as what I had with the Reds," Hughes said. "I think I will be helping Jim more at the big-league level, but still doing some scouting. I'll be there to take some of the burden off the major-league scouts, Ken Kravec and Keith Champion." In the past, Baseball America has named Hughes, 61, one of the top 10 scouts of the 20th century and the best player development executive of the 1990s. He has spent 36 seasons in professional baseball with six different organizations, beginning with his hometown San Francisco Giants in 1967. While working for the New York Yankees, he actually signed John Elway to a professional contract before Elway ultimately decided to devote himself exclusively to his now-legendary football career.
