    Extractions: Stanley Frank Musial (Stan the Man) was born in Donora, Pennsylvania. In the minds of sports fans everywhere, Stan Musial, the Cardinals and St. Louis are forever linked. Musial started baseball with the Cardinals as a pitcher, but in 1941 was converted to an outfielder/first baseman because of an arm injury. His Major League career, all with the Cardinals, lasted from 1941 through 1963. His starting salary went from $65 per month in 1938 to $100,000 per year in 1954. Musial was nicknamed "The Man" by fans of the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1946 after he returned from naval duty in World War II. Since his retirement as an active player in 1963, Musial has served a stint as General Manager and Senior Vice president of the St. Louis Cardinals. He is an honorary member of the board of the St. Louis Rams. He has acted as Director of the Professional Baseball Players of America. Civic endeavors have included chairing the President's Council on Physical Fitness under President Lyndon Johnson, and for 20 years, the Crippled Children's Society of St. Louis. He co-chaired the committee planning the papal visit to St. Louis and served on the Baseball Hall of Fame Committee on Veterans. He has also served on boards of directors of the U.S.O., the Urological Research Foundation, and Shelter the Children. Today, Stan Musial is president of Stan the Man, Inc. He is married to the former Lillian Labash, also of Donora, Pennsylvania. They have four children, Richard, Geraldine, Janet and Jean, 11 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

The Musial Division is an unlimited age division, but will overwhelmingly be players 19 years of age and over. The 2002 Tennessee State Tournament will be July 25-28 at Shelby Park and Seven Oaks Park in Nashville, Tennessee. The Southeast Regional Tournament will be July 31-August 3 in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. The Stan Musial World Series will be August 8-12 in Battle Creek, Michigan. WOODEN BATS SANDLOTT Baseball formed its first wooden bat league in the summer of 2001. As with last year, in 2002, aluminum bats will be permissible in postseason tournaments. Coaches with professional experience are being secured from various colleges. These coaches will be compensated to provide leadership and training for the college players. Approximately 90% of the players in the 2002 SANDLOTT 19 and over wood bat league will be college players. There were many college applicants for the league in 2000 that were unable to participate because of full rosters. The wooden bat league will attract even more college players, and additional coaches will be secured for the new teams. Additional field space should become available through the coaches' schools.

Though he was making only $13,000 he never considered the offer, because he would be breaking his word to the St. Louis fans. Although he was a baseball superstar his whole career, he never asked for special treatment. He always acted like just another member of the team, and expected to be treated like a regular player, never like a star. And if you ever needed a favor, he was happy to help. But he was a superstar. Stanislaus Musial was the son of immigrants. His father, Lukasz, worked in the local zinc mine and wanted his son to have an education and better himself. Determined to be a baseball player, Stan was a 19 year old playing for the Donora Zincs when he was first signed by the St. Louis organizations, and he would never play for another organization. He started out as a pitcher in the Minor Leagues, but his good hitting caused him to play in the outfield between starts. When he hurt his shoulder and couldn't throw his fastball any more, he was going to quit baseball.
