Extractions: The 1969 Giants finished second only to the Atlanta Braves (who won 18 of their last 21 games to take the first N.L. Western Division title). The Giants split the season series with Atlanta (9-9) and finished only 3 games behind at season's end. Led by manager Clyde King, the club featured N.L. MVP Willie McCovey at first base, Ron Hunt at second, Hal Lanier at shortstop and Jim Davenport at third. Other infielders were Bobby Etheridge, Tito Fuentes, Don Mason and first baseman Bob Burda. The catching corps consisted of Dick Dietz, Jack Hiatt and Bob Barton. Willie Mays, Bobby Bonds and Ken Henderson were the outfield regulars, with Dave Marshall and Jim Ray Hart also seeing action. Highlights of the year are covered, and Dick Dietz, Ken Henderson, McCovey, Bobby Bonds and Willie Mays are all shown hitting round trippers in this video. Bonds becomes only the fourth player in history to steal over 30 bases and hit 30 home runs in a single season (45 SB + 32 HR). Shown is the McCovey shift (implemented by several teams, including Cincinnati) and shown also is McCovey beating it (Bye-Bye Baby)! In '69, MVP McCovey lead the league with 45 home runs and 126 RBI in addition to hitting .320!

Extractions: THE DIAMOND EXCHANGE ...Tranaction Analysis with a Fantasy Baseball Perspective by Rob Leibowitz January 20th This past week has seen a flurry of activity, mostly in regards to the arbitration-avoiding signings. Typically, these signings are limited to one-year contracts that have no impact on a players' playing time or on their stats. The only tangible impact is the one on the team's increasing payroll. That said, this week's column will focus primarily on the non-arbitration related signings and of course the three way trade between the White Sox, Yankees, and Expos. The Braves, trying to fill their left-handed relief void, signed

It's been a lot of fun, but for many reasons, some more obvious than others, it is just seems right to quit now. However, I'll still keep this site up for anyone who still wishes to stop by, and an update in the distant future is never out of the question. Thanks to everyone who has visited in the past, and an advanced thank you to anyone who visits in the future.

Extractions: April 23, 2002 "What we're trying to do is to get them to play hard nine innings and to get them so that they're fundamentally sound," said Fred Stanley , extended spring training manager for the San Francisco Giants, about his job during the months of April and May. "Our job is to teach them as much as we can about the game of baseball and get them onto a team."
