If you really think that's all there is to say about the 2000 offseason, then it's time to fill you in on some of the moves you may have missed. Two weeks ago, the Chicago Cubs pulled off a pair of deals with the Bay Area's two rival franchises. Fans on the North Side now get to welcome Bill Mueller and Matt Stairs into the friendly confines. Unfortunately for the Cubbies, there's a reason why those two were available in the first place, much less why nobody is suddenly conceding a World Series appearance. Bill Mueller, 1996-2000

Bellhorn, who has set a Cubs record for switch-hitters with 25 homers, will move from second to third base. Verplancke, 24, has a live arm but also a history of elbow problems. The Mariners drafted him in the second round out of Cal State Los Angeles in 1998, but didn't sign him after discovering he had a torn ligament and required Tommy John surgery. He joined the Giants as an 11th-rounder in 1999 and signed late in the summer for $600,000. He finished each of his first two pro seasons at Triple-A Fresno and spent the entire season there in 2002, but has yet to reach the big leagues. He has a 93-mph fastball that also features nice tail and run, and he'll mix in sliders, curveballs and changeups. He hasn't shown much feel for his secondary pitches and had some elbow tenderness again this summer. In 51 games at Fresno, he went 3-5, 3.78 with three saves and 52 strikeouts in 64 innings.

Diamond Mind Baseball baseball Articles 1999 PostSeason Reviews. bill mueller, the Giants' thirdbaseman, has played second base, and Jeff Kent has played third base. http://www.diamond-mind.com/articles/pm1999/pm99sfn.htm
Extractions: March 10, 2000 This article takes a look at how the San Francisco Giants did in the 1999 season relative to preseason expectations. For an overview of the approach used in this review, and a definition of some of the key terms and statistics, please see the overview page called 1999 Team-by-Team Performance Reviews Projected Actual Runs for 758 872 Runs allowed 736 831 Run margin 22 41 Wins 85 86 Pythagorean Wins 85 85 Placement 2nd 2nd Despite losing their best offensive player for a couple of months, the Giants matched their projected run margin and win total very closely. The raw numbers were higher, but the raw numbers were higher for everybody. The Giants offense was projected to be near the top, and it finished 3rd in the league, while the Giants pitching staff was projected to be middle of the pack, and that's where it was. Had Bonds and closer Robb Nen been healthy, the Giants might have been able to improve on their projections; they're hoping that's all it takes for 2000. One reason the Giants were able to stay within sight of a pennant race last year even without Barry Bonds is that there weren't any offensive black holes in the lineup. Sure, there were some positions where you'd like to see some improvement, like the infield corners, but no place where the life gets sucked out of rallies. Catcher might turn out to be one of those black hole positions next year, but there's reason to believe that the combination of Mirabelli and Estalella can avoid that. The bench is another question mark; the Giants let most of their veteran bench players go, opting to go with younger players from within the organization. If you've got a veteran lineup, as the Giants do, you're probably better off with a younger bench less likely to get injured.
