Absent from the list were the Cincinnati Reds, who at the time had yet to acquire The Greatest Player In Baseball (tm), Ken Griffey Jr., from Seattle. Now, the addition of Griffey would not have propelled the Reds to the top of my list, as there is still something to be said for acquiring Dante Bichette (and it isn't a nice thing). With the Reds listed first for the sake of novelty, here's a list of the National League teams who either got worse or simply didn't improve this offseason. Cincinnati

Pirates Meadows bests Maddux; Giles delivers in 10th Thursday, August 29, 2002 By Paul Meyer, Post-Gazette Sports Writer Brian Meadows gave a pretty fair imitation of Atlanta's Greg Maddux last night. Brian Meadows allows three hits in eight innings. (Matt Freed, Post-Gazette) Pirates Report If baseball stops, many will take a hit "I don't think anybody can imitate Greg Maddux," Pirates Manager Lloyd McClendon said. "That doesn't show Greg Maddux the proper respect. Brian just pitched Brian's game." Thing was, neither Meadows nor Maddux figured in the decision last night. By the time Brian Giles singled in the only run of the game in the 10th inning of the Pirates' 1-0 victory at PNC Park, both starters had departed. Barely.

Pirates Cardinals rip Pirates, 10-6 Tuesday, August 13, 2002 By Paul Meyer, Post-Gazette Sports Writer The Pirates did something last night they didn't do eight years ago last night. They played baseball. Pirates starter Brian Meadows gets a visit from pitching coach Spin Williams and catcher Jason Kendall against the Cardinals last night at PNC Park. Meadows retired the first 10 batters, but was roughed up for six runs before exiting in the fifth inning. (Matt Freed, Post-Gazette) They didn't like it much, but they played. With baseball still not home free on avoiding a players strike this time around and memories of the strike of 1994 floating around yesterday, St. Louis beat the Pirates, 10-6, at PNC Park. Brian Giles became the third Pirates player to hit 30 or more home runs in at least four consecutive seasons when he hit his 30th off left-hander Steve Kline in the seventh inning. Ralph Kiner (1947-52) and Willie Stargell (1970-73) are the other two.

Transactions Like their divisional foes, or woes, in Milwaukee the Pirates have built a recent history of sub-par seasons, the victim of little revenue and already inflated salaries. Unlike the Brewers, the Pirates have some legitimate hitters in Brian Giles, Jason Kendall and Aramis Ramirez along with one of the game's best unknown commodities in closer Mike Williams. Adding to the core of talent was the acquisition of young starters Kip Wells, Sean Lowe and Josh Fogg in exchange for Todd Ritchie along with the return of recovering ace-in-waiting Kris Benson. The question was whether the lack of hitting depth, with weaknesses in center, second and short along with the lack of a true leadoff hitter, would be too much to overcome. With youth and the fiery Lloyd McClendon on their side, Pittsburgh wouldn't go down without a fight, looking to snap their nine-year losing streak.
