Extractions: Kenny Lofton When Kenny first came to baseball, it was considered by some that he was actually a better basketball player. But he proved the doubters wrong by becoming an outstanding hitter for average, with lightning speed and a good glove. A perfect fit at the top of the explosive Indians lineup for most of a decade, he now goes to the Pirates to try and help them reach respectability. Extractions: Astros Mets Apr. 1 - After being unceremoniously dumped by the Astros, Reynolds cleared waivers and is actively searching for a new home. According to the New York Post, the Mets, concerned about the health of Pedro Astacio and durability of David Cone, are interested in signing the former All-Star to a minor league deal. While Reynolds would prefer to join a major league roster, his familiarity with manager Art Howe and pitching coach Vern Ruhle may lure him to New York. Marlins Mar. 21 - The Yankees showcased Hitchock in a Double A game Thursday, inviting scouts from every Major League team to have a look. Five teams took New York up on its invitation, including the Rockies, who sent three scouts. Reports say Colorado is looking for a third team to help swing a deal, with Hitchock's salary split among all three clubs to soften the blow. However, Rockies GM Dan O'Dowd downplayed the team's interest in getting involved in a Hitchcock deal, telling the Denver Post, "Our scouts were there doing their due diligence. That's it. There's no other motivation there."

Extractions: Not long ago, most major- league teams would have loved starting Kenny Lofton in center and Reggie Sanders in right. The Pittsburgh Pirates hope it's still a winning combination. Lofton and Sanders, teammates with the National League champion San Francisco Giants last season, were reunited in Pittsburgh when Lofton reached terms yesterday on a $1,025,000, one-year contract. The Pirates had tried to sign the 35-year-old Lofton since spring training started, finally making the deal after sweetening their initial offer of $500,000 in base salary and $500,000 in performance bonuses. The base salary matches Lofton's 2002 contract, with $525,000 deferred until the end of the season. He can make an additional $475,000 in performance bonuses. The deal means Brian Giles moves back to left - he has been playing in center this spring - and Sanders shifts to right. Matt Stairs and Craig Wilson, who were to platoon in right, almost certainly will get fewer outfield starts.
