Extractions: PHOENIX Billy Beane finally had blundered. He had let his emotions, which can be as stormy as Monday's weather, cloud his brilliance. He had made a knee-jerk trade of closers that could cost his A's a World Series they're good enough to win. Or so I suspected until I heard General Manager Beane's explanation. Like his new closer, Beane threw me a change-up. At a glance it appeared Beane had thrown a gopher ball by swapping Billy Koch (who'll make $4.25 million this season) for Keith Foulke (who'll make $6 million). Didn't Beane say late last season that Koch at least deserved some MVP consideration? Koch was the first pitcher ever to save 40 or more games (44) with double-digit wins (11). Koch, with his billy goat chin hair and rubber-armed, triple-digit fastball, came to embody the battling spirit of last year's 103-win team. ``Oh, he was a spectacular teammate,'' Beane said over the laptop on his office desk. ``He cared only about winning. His durability is unique among closers. He will be missed.''

Extractions: ASSOCIATED PRESS January 29, 2003 Koch, acquired in December from the Oakland Athletics in a six-player trade, gets $4.25 million this year and $6,375,000 in 2004. Koch was scheduled for an arbitration hearing next month. He was asking for $5.9 million for one year and the White Sox countered with $4.25 million. He had a $2.35 million base salary last season and made $150,000 in performance bonuses. Koch, 27, and two minors leaguers joined the White Sox in exchange for closer Keith Foulke, catcher Mark Johnson and minor league right-hander Joe Valentine. Koch was 11-4 with 44 saves and a 3.27 ERA with 93 strikeouts in 93 2-3 innings for Oakland last season. "As we talked about at the time we traded for Billy, part of the appeal of doing the deal was the fact that we would be able to keep him around beyond 2003," White Sox assistant general manager Rick Hahn said. "This contract not only rewards Billy for the unprecedented level of success he has achieved at this stage in his career, but also provides the club with some cost certainly going forward," Hahn said.

After the torture As fans have endured, let us enjoy it, OK? Now that Ive got that off my chest I can attempt to extricate myself from the writers block Ive been mired in since September 24, date of my last column. It seemed like every time I sat down to type what was in my head, something dramatic would happen in the local baseball arena, distracting me from my mission, the now that weve had some distance we can take a fresh look post-mortem of the As glorious and tragic 2002 season. The only things fresh around my house are the wounds sustained in the Twins series, and they are not about to heal quickly, thank you. They say that there are five stages of emotions one goes through after a traumatic loss: shock, anger, denial, grief, and, finally, acceptance. I for one, am still entrenched in stage two, and probably will be until this version of the Athletics brings another World Series trophy to Oakland. Acceptance? You gotta be kidding. Talk to a Red Sox fan about acceptance and youll wish you had kept your mouth shut. My son, bless his heart, has moved to stage three. He is deadly serious when he says, It never happened, Dad.
