Extractions: Joe Jackson began his professional baseball career in 1908 with the Philadelphia Athletics organization. For his first two years Jackson was up and down between the minor and the major leagues, playing only ten games with the Athletics. Becoming increasingly unhappy Jackson was traded to the Cleveland Naps in 1911 where he played his first full season. The Cleveland organization would eventually be called the Indians in 1915. That year Jackson compiled a .408 batting average, a record that still stands for rookie seasons. Coming into the prime of his career Jackson batted .395 and led the American League in triples in 1912. The next year Jackson led the league with 197 hits and .551 slugging average. In August of 1915 Jackson was traded to the Chicago White Sox. Even with his new surroundings his tremendous career continued. In 1917 Jackson and the White Sox accomplished the greatest feat in all of baseball, a World Series title. During the series Jackson batted .307 and led the White Sox to victory over the New York Giants.

He considers you the greatest ballplayer who ever lived, second only to the great Ty Cobb. I play leftfield on my high school team. My hobby is baseball. I read about you in books. Will you send me your autograph? I have sent you an envelope with my name and address on it and a piece of paper for you to sign on. Thank you very much. William Bennethum Reading, Pennsylvania" In 1949, a boy named William Bennethum wrote to "Shoeless" Joe Jackson asking him for his autograph. Because Joe was illiterate, he was unable to honor the boy's request. A year later, after Joe's death, the letter from Bennethum was found among Joe's belongings in its original envelope. Joe had signed his name on the back of the envelope twice, and was attempting a third signature. (see below) These are some of the only known Joe Jackson signatures that exist. Years later, in 1998, I contacted then 62-year-old William Bennethum, who said that he remembered writing the letter to "Shoeless" Joe, and that he had received an autograph not Joe's, but his wife, Katy's. She had always signed for him.

Of all the players, Jackson's involvement in the conspiracy seemed the least plausible, as his on-field stats were sparkling a .375 batting average and a perfect fielding percentage during the series. A jury later acquitted Jackson of the charges, and despite holding the third highest lifetime batting average in baseball history at .356, the legendary outfielder remains an outcast from the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. Following a highly successful minor league career with the Charlotte Hornets of the North Carolina Baseball League, Archibald Wright Graham made his major league debut on June 29, 1905, with the New York Giants. It was the same day he retired from professional baseball. With a ten-run lead over the Brooklyn Dodgers after eight innings, Giants manager John McGraw made a defensive change, replacing George Brown with Archie "Moonlight" Graham in right field. In less than five minutes, three quick infield outs by the Dodgers ended the game, along with Graham's only chance to face a big league pitcher. While the Giants went on to defeat the Philadelphia Athletics four games to one in the 1905 World Series, Graham left baseball to fulfill his dream of becoming a medical doctor, eventually pursuing his life's work in Chisholm, Minnesota, the year following the Great Chisholm Fire of 1908. "Doc" Graham spent his first six years practicing medicine at Chisholm's Rood Hospital and the next 44 years as physician for the Chisholm schools, where he gained national recognition for his thirteen year study of children's blood pressure, as well as the love and respect of the entire local community. Moonlight Graham finally did get his time at bat in the 1989 motion picture Field of Dreams.
