Most important are the additions of righthander Chan Ho Park and outfielder Carl Everett and the return of Juan Gonzalez. Big things are expected from each, but and here's a real surprise Gonzalez looks like the surest bet among them to come through. INFIELD Shortstop Alex Rodriguez should be the No. 1 pick in most every draft. He's healthy, in his prime and puts up otherworldly production at a premium position. He does it all. Dave Paisley In part one, we learned that the Yankees are a very even-hitting team that has no weak spots, and is actually generating more runs than their other offensive numbers would suggest. Today, we'll take a look at their pitching. Starting Rotation Coming out of spring training, the Yankees looked to have a pretty decent rotation, but with a few question marks. David Cone's shoulder health was a potential problem, but Andy Pettitte continued to establish himself as an alternate ace to Cone, only younger. David Wells has always been something of a flaky enigma, but looked like a solid number three guy. After that, it looked like Ramiro Mendoza was ready to step into the rotation, and no matter which Hideki Irabu showed up, he'd be no worse than most other teams' fifth starters. The Yankees were also potentially in the market for Randy Johnson, but the various rumors that had combinations of Pettitte or Mendoza and Mariano Rivera going to Seattle were pure pipe dreams. For whatever reason, the Yankees, despite a rocky first couple of weeks, elected to stand pat. The acquisition of Orlando Hernandez had everyone wondering what they would do with yet another starter if he turned out to be any good. Not everyone expected much at the time, given Irabu's shaky debut the year before.

The group will buy 51 percent of the Pioneers from the Ervin family. The Ervins will retain a 49 percent share in the team they have owned since 1996. Steve Ervin will remain the executive vice president of the team and said the rest of the front office will also remain the same. Nomo, Irabu and Suzuki formed a company called Silex to buy the Pioneers. The team will stay in Elmira, where a professional team has played almost continuously since 1885. "This is a real shot in the arm," Ervin said. "I don't know the actual demographics, but if we're not the smallest town in the league, then we're the second. They have the resources to buy other teams but became comfortable with us."

Extractions: Web search Got tunes? It was just a matter of time before Hideki Irabu and George Steinbrenner discovered what the rest of us already knew: that even under the best conditions, making the transition from the Chiba Lotte Marines to the New York Yankees would be difficult. Under the conditions that Irabu set for himself, however, it has been darned near impossible. In a display of two-facedness that would have made the late Richard M. Nixon proud, Irabu humbly stated his dream to play baseball professionally in the United States; then, when it became evident that his dream would be realized via the San Diego Padres, he and his agent, Don Nomura, suddenly changed their tune. What Irabu had meant to say, so the story goes, was that he had dreamed of playing for the Yankees. Apparently his dream included visions of himself making outrageous demands of his prospective new employer and insisting he would not work unless those demands were met. Perhaps this is unfair of me, because I've never been a terrorist, but it seems that the only careers in which this type of behavior is tolerated and too often rewarded are terrorism and professional sports. I can count on one finger the number of seconds I would remain employed were I to place such demands on my employer. Irabu's crowning achievement came when he compared San Diego to a prison camp. I have lived in San Diego for several years, and although I have never been incarcerated, I like to think that my present living conditions are significantly better than those of a prison (unless I was in for tax evasion or embezzlement or something and got to watch TV and play golf all day).
