Nihongo Chiba Lotte Marines history Originally owned by the Mainichi newspaper chain, the Orions were established in September 1949 and joined the Pacific League the following season. With an 81-34 record in 1950, the Orions earned the PL pennant and won the first Japan Series four games to two. Mainichi's Kaoru Betto was named Most Valuable Player after batting .335 and leading the league in home runs and RBIs. Prior to the 1958 season, the Orions merged with the Daiei Unions. A mediocre team the previous season (41-89), the Unions had been playing in various incarnations since 1946. Never a particularly strong team, Daiei peaked in 1950 with a third place 62-54 record and gradually slid out of contention. After the merger, the subsequent team became the Daimai Orions. Though Betto held the Orions together through the transition and led the team to a strong second-place 82-48 record in 1959, Daimai hired new manager Yukio Nishimoto in 1960. With MVP Yamauchi winning the home run (32) and RBI (103) crowns while Kihachi Enomoto won the PL batting title (.344), the Orions compiled a team .262 average with 100 home runs. On the mound, Masaichi Ono led the league with a 33-11 record and a 1.98 ERA while striking out 258 batters. With excellent pitching and hitting performances, the Orions captured the PL pennant but were unable to defeat the Taiyo Whales, who won the 1960 Japan Series in four games.

I do have to admit to being a bit concerned about his health, but one could just as easily blamed it on the rust from having an extended time off. Nice to see Clark get a couple of hits (immediately after I traded him off my scoresheet team for a middle reliever, which is a can't lose proposition, since if he hits the Red Sox win and if he doesn't my roto team ends up ahead on the trade).

Each league has six teams who play each other 27 times in the April-October season for a total of 135 games. The winners of each league face one another in the Japan Series in October to decide the championship team. The popularity of the sport tends to ebb and flow with the rise and fall of famous players and the changing fortunes of the Yomiuri Giants , the country's most popular team. Baseball was first introduced to Japan in 1873 at Kaisei Gakko, now Tokyo University. The sport quickly spread among universities and middle schools and became the country's biggest school sport. Today, the two national high school tournaments (the National Invitational Senior High School Baseball Tournament and the All-Japan High School Baseball Championship Tournament) held in spring and summer are hugely popular. Over 4,000 high school teams take part in regional qualifiers. Teams representing each prefecture battle it out at

Irabu was a number one draft choice out of Jinsei Gakuen High School in 1988 by the Lotte Orions (later the Chiba Lotte Marines), for whom he played with for nine years, leading the Pacific League in wins in 1995 under then manager Bobby Valentine as well as ERA titles that year and in 1996. He also lead the circuit in strikeouts in 1994 and 1995 and was the third fastest in history to 1000 lifetime whiffs in Japanese annals. For his Japan career, he was 59-59 with 11 saves. He then went to the Yankees after a tempestuous fight with the San Diego Padres, ultimately posting a 34-35 record with 16 saves in six MLB seasons. Hot Shots....

His outlandish corkscrew delivery may have helped draw even more media glare than was warranted by his meteoric rise and fall (and recent re-emergence) as a pitching talent. His Dodger teammate Chanho Park, who came from Corea in 1995, showed that an Asian hurler could have staying power too not to mention ultimately command seven-figure annual salaries. Now the Mariners are stealing the Asian baseball spotlight with the dazzling $13 million Ichiro Suzuki. Halfway into his rookie season here, he was leading the league in hits and steals, not to mention drawing $2 million magazine offers to pose nude. His reward an All-Star slot along with Chanho Park. Even better, their respective teams stand an excellent chance of meeting in the World Series. Currently six other Asian ballers mostly Japanese and Corean imports are playing in the American majors and are, for the most part, doing well. That's why scouts are now laying the groundwork for importing as many as 15 more young stars from Japan, Corea and even Taiwan in time for the 2002 season. Admittedly, even a contingent of 24 Asian ballplayers would be only 5% of a combined major league roster of about 500. But if Nomo, Park and Suzuki are any indication, they could have a significant impact on the Asian male media image.

And where's one of the best places to buy those boots? Bangkok, apparently. That's where she went shoe shopping last week. Osmond, half of the 1970s megahit TV program The Donny and Marie Show, ordered a customized pair that will probably be the talk of the country scene back home. After all, there aren't many cowboys (or cowgirls) walking around in boots made from the skins of stingrays. Osmond, 37, is touring Asia with The Sound of Music, in which she plays Maria Von Trapp. He Said What?
Extractions: Hideki Matsui, the baseball player nicknamed "Godzilla" who has left the Yomiuri Giants and signed with the New York Yankees of the US Major Leagues after declaring free agency, is currently doing spring training with the Yankees in Tampa, Florida, in preparation for the season opener on March 25. Since he announced his intention to go to the Major Leagues in November 2002, Matsui's every move has been closely reported by the Japanese media, including the announcement that he would sign with the Yankees, the announcement that he had officially joined the team, and his arrival in camp. This intense coverage demonstrates the high level of interest in Matsui among the Japanese public. One of the main reasons for this interest is the fact that Matsui is regarded as representing all of Japan by virtue of having batted cleanup (in the fourth slot) for the Yomiuri Giants, Japan's most popular team. Matsui is widely believed to be the best all-around hitter in Japan. Last season he finished first in the Central League for both home runs and runs batted in (RBIs) and barely missed capturing the triple crown when he finished just shy of winning the batting title as well (the award for the highest batting average). Additionally, the team that Matsui has joinedthe New York Yankeesboasts a history of about 100 years and has been home to some of baseball's greatest players, including Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and Joe DiMaggio. Much of the support offered to Matsui by Japanese fans is related to their interest in whether he will be able to play under such pressure and demonstrate his skill.
