Extractions: Each season, several hitters surprise their teams, fans, and fantasy owners by putting up career-best numbers in several offensive categories. For some players, this is an anticipated progression as they mature into Major League ballplayers. For other players, it is more surprising, as they surpass any expectations of their offense capabilities as indicated by their minor league and major league careers up to their breakout seasons. In any case, should you draft one of these players at the right time, their extra offense output can be the difference in the standings for you. However, it is very difficult to predict when a career year will happen. If you take chances on players on draft day, instead of having breakout seasons for you, the majority of them will break your heart! Last week, I asked for your picks for the players that you feel are most likely to have a career-best year. This week, I am including the response from Marshall E. Tom, and Id like to thank him for offering his insights on this topic. He lists several picks in both leagues that he feels are primed for a career year. In the AL, Marshall has Miguel Tejada (Oakland), Karim Garcia (Detroit), and Jose Cruz Jr. (Toronto). All are good picks, but I like Tejada the best of the three. I am concerned that Karim Garcia wont get the at-bats in Detroit, unless Bobby Higginson falters. Jose Cruz Jr. is at the right age, and he has the potential, but he really hasnt shown the improvement from season-to-season, in my opinion, to indicate that he is ready to take the next step (though you never know when it will happen!). Tejeda has steadily improved over the last couple of seasons, and he is only 23 not even starting his prime. I would expect that at worst his numbers will improve, and at best he will make a push to include himself among the best shortstops in the AL.

Extractions: Many questions have to be answered. Will the Indians continue to dominate the American League Central? Can the Red Sox finally catch the Yankees? Does the addition of Ken Griffey Jr. elevate the previously low budget Reds to contenders? And, oh yea, will either the White Sox or Cubs give fans a reason to follow them in September? According to my calculations (they are pretty reliable, trust me), the Yankees, Indians, and Mariners will all win their divisions in the American League, and the Blue Jays will make the playoffs via the wild card. In the National League, the Braves, Reds, and Diamondbacks will all win their respective divisions, with the Mets taking the wild card spot. The World Series will come down to the Indians and Reds, with the Tribe winning in six. With a pitching rotation that includes Roger Clemens, Orlando Hernandez, David Cone and Andy Pettite, it will be no surprise if the Yankees tear through the American League on their way to their third straight World Series. They have an explosive line-up that is as tough one-through-five as any in baseball, and they have a bullpen that can shut down opponents in the late innings. With Ramiro Mendoza and Mariano Rivera finishing games, a seventh inning lead will usually become a win. The Yanks should win the AL East and will be the odds on favorites to repeat as World Series Champs. With a payroll reaching nearly 82 million, there is no excuse not to.
MSNBCSports - Look-ahead To Baseball's Second Half MANAGER Davey Lopes (7389 career). NEW FACES OF jeffrey hammonds, RHPWill Cunnane, RHP Brandon Kolb, OF Brant Brown, OF Devon White. http://www.msnbc.com/news/SPT/baseball/spring2001/brewers.htm
Extractions: 2000 RECAP: 73-89, third place in NL Central. MANAGER: Davey Lopes (73-89 career). NEW FACES: OF Jeffrey Hammonds, RHP Will Cunnane, RHP Brandon Kolb, OF Brant Brown, OF Devon White. LONG GONE: IF Charlie Hayes, SS Santiago Perez, OF Lyle Mouton, OF Marquis Grissom. WHAT TO LOOK FOR THIS SEASON: RUMOR MILL: Davey Lopes would love to have more speed in his lineup, but it just isn't there, especially with Devon White coming off the bench. But if the situation presents itself, look for some speed to be added, as the Brewers tried to deal for Houston's Roger Cedeno over the winter. THE PRESSURE IS ON: Jeromy Burnitz had an off year in 2000, dipping all the way to .232, while falling a bit in home runs and RBI as well. He'll never be a big average hitter, but he has to get back to the .260-.270 range if the middle of the lineup is going to be productive. PROJECTED BATTING ORDER: 2B Ron Belliard, SS Mark Loretta, LF Geoff Jenkins, 1B Richie Sexson, RF Jeromy Burnitz, CF Jeffrey Hammonds, 3B Jose Hernandez/Tyler Houston, C Henry Blanco. PROJECTED ROTATION: RHP Jeff D'Amico, RHP Jamey Wright, RHP Jimmy Haynes, RHP Ben Sheets, RHP John Snyder or RHP Paul Rigdon.

AFBL (6/1) After Friday's 20-15 slugfest with the Philadelphia Endzone Animals, the Dragons have scored 10 or more runs five times this year. With 462 runs scored this season, the team is third in the league in offense. "We're firing on all cylinders," said Nomar Garciaparra, who leads the team in most offensive categories. "The top of the lineup is just cranking." The team's first three hitters, Johnny Damon, Tony Eusebio and Garciaparra, have combined to go 12-24 with 15 R and 10 RBI in two games since Jorge Posada went down with an injury Wednesday. After repeated cries from the fatigued bullpen, management finally went out and got another arm for the depleted relief corps. "We've got some good arms here" said reliever Jeff Nelson, "but we are piling up the innings." It got so bad that several starters have already been called in to pitch in relief. "We're not getting enough days rest" said starter Cal Eldred. "Brucey [starter Bruce Chen] had to tie some Otter Pops around his harm after the last time he pitched." Scott Sauerbeck was signed to help take some pressure off the pen, but Sauerbeck has been disappointing so far. In the two games he's appeared in so far, Sauerbeck has allowed 4 earned runs in 1 2/3 innings for a 21.60 ERA. "I just need to get accustomed to the new park" said Sauerbeck. Sauerbeck last appeared on the Endzone Animals, compiling a 7.79 ERA in 20 appearances before being cut.
