SPECIAL GUESTS Ruben "Hurricane" Carter Kelly Gruber Suhana Meharchand Ed the Sock Kelly Gruber BIOGRAPHY Kelly was drafted in the 1st round, 10th pick overall, in the 1980 Major League Baseball draft by the Cleveland Indians. In 1983, Kelly was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays after being left unprotected by the Indians. By 1988, Kelly was a regular for the Blue Jays. In fact, he was chosen for the All-Star game in 1989 and 1990. 1990 was a breakthrough year for Kelly. Not only was he an All-Star, but he won the AL Gold Glove for third basemen and the Silver Slugger Award. That season, he also hit 31 homeruns and knocked in 118 RBI's. And to cap off a terrific season, Kelly hit for the cycle with a single, double, triple and homerun in the same game on April 16th. He was the first Blue Jay in the history of the franchise to do so. The Blue Jays won the 1992 World Series and Kelly was at center stage. He hit a game tying homerun in Game 3 and then in Game 4, he scored the winning run with a belly flop across home plate that scraped his chin and left him woozy. Unfortunately, during that same 1992 season, Kelly felt something pop in his neck while swinging. It was a bone spur on his spinal cord which eventually threatened his everyday movements and mobility. Only surgery saved Kelly from potential paralysis, but it also claimed his career.

1990 AL MVP AWARD No other player in baseball history has both 3000 hits and 2000 walks, not to mentionover 2000 runs scored and Harold Reynolds and kelly gruber won Gold Gloves http://brsmith.mybravenet.com/History/400Pages/al1990.html
Extractions: The Oakland Athletics won their third consecutive pennant; they swept the Red Sox in the league playoffs, but were themselves swept in the World Series. Their best player was star left-fielder Rickey Henderson, who had his best season and won the MVP Award. Rickey was also the team's best player in the playoffs, but the rest of the team around him fell apart against the Reds in the World Series. Henderson was 31 years old, midway through his great career. Though Rickey won't have much problem getting into the Hall Of Fame, I think he is another example of a player whose reputation has suffered because fans identify him with only a single skill. Rickey is the greatest base stealer in baseball history; he does much, much more, but gets little credit beyond what he does on the basepaths. On the other hand, players who do well in one of the Triple Crown categories tend to be overrated, like Fielder.

Extractions: John Holway the japanese insider 1990, Japan Prevails By John B. Holway In the long history of U.S.-Japan series, the Japanese have won two series, 1970 and 1990. In 1970 they beat the San Francisco Giants six games to three. In 1990 they bested an American All-Star team four games to three with one tie. That 1990 U.S. team included: BA HR Lenny Dykstra Barry Bonds Ken Griffey Jr Julio Franco Roberto Alomar Cecil Fielder Kelly Gruber Mike Sciosia Shawan Dunston Glenn Davis Jesse Barfield Dave Stewart Ramon Martinez Dave Stieb Chuck Finley Randy Johnson Oil Can Boyd Bobby Thigpen 57 saves Rob Dibble 31 saves Jeff Montgomery 24 saves The Japanese strategy was to send each pitcher to the mound for only two or three innings, thus the Americans would be constantly facing a new hurler almost every time they came to bat. The Americans may have been suffering from jet lag as they dropped the first four games. Game 1 The sleepy visitors got only two hits in the Tokyo Dome as the Japanese beat Boyd 2-1. Game 2 Japan tied it in the third on a walk and three singles and went into the ninth with a 4-3 lead.

Extractions: History of the World Series - 1992 While the 1992 World Series between the Braves and Toronto Blue Jays might have fallen just short of equaling the 1991 Series for sheer excitement, it was real close. Thisclose. This time, the Series participants engaged in four one-run games out of the six and the decisive game was an 11-inning thrill-o-rama that for taut drama would be difficult to top. The never-say-die Braves, who captured the National League pennant with a three-run, ninth-inning rally against Pittsburgh, showed similar resolve in Game 6 of the 1992 Series. Down three games to two but buoyed by the fact the Series had returned to Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium, the Braves nonetheless entered the bottom of the ninth inning staring at a 2-1 deficit. Plus, hard-throwing Tom Henke, who had 34 saves in the regular season, was coming on to pitch for Toronto, whose bullpen was working on a scoreless streak of 15 1/3 innings. Jeff Blauser led off the ninth with a single off Henke, and Damon Berryhill advanced him to second with a bunt. Pinch-hitter Lonnie Smith drew a walk, putting the potential winning run on base.
