The American Association of Baseball Coaches (AABC) awarded him the prestigious Lefty Gomez Award in January of 1982. The honor is considered the tops of that profession. Among other Lefty Gomez Award winners is none other than Peter Uberroth, former Commissioner of Major League Baseball and the former organizer of the 1984 Olympic Games held in Los Angeles, California. The Lefty Gomez Award is presented to an individual for outstanding achievements and accomplishments in the game of baseball. The record books will read 660 wins, 329 losses and 10 ties for the 26-year collegiate coaching career of Tom Chandler, one short of 1,000 games. But the books should be adjusted by one more win because that victory for Coach Chandler has come in the game of life. Not only was Tom Chandler an outstanding baseball coach, but he was an outstanding person.

Extractions: for history of All-Star Game Every sport has its night to honor its greats. Basketball, hockey, football and racing all have their versions of an All-Star Game. None of these sports, however, can fall back on the history of baseball's All-Star Game. A crowd of 49,200 gathered in Comiskey Park in Chicago on July 6, 1933, to witness what was hailed as the "Game of the Century." The drama and the history came together in the third inning. With one man on, Babe Ruth stepped up to bat and hit the first home run in All-Star Game history off the National League's Bill Hallahan. Less than two years later, Ruth retired from baseball. But, the first All-Star Game put the Yankees great in the spotlight for one more moment. Ruth added more to his own legend with a spectacular catch in the outfield that robbed the Reds' Chick Hafey of a hit in the eighth inning. His play helped to preserve a 4-2 win for the American League squad and a pitching victory for Lefty Gomez. Frankie Frisch of the National League hits the second homer in the game's history. For fans in attendance it was the chance of a lifetime. Baseball's greats were gathered together in one place, at one time.
