All Star '99 / Boston.com / Baseball MVP None. Winning pitcher lefty gomez (Yankees). 1935 AL 4, NL 1 leftygomez started and pitched the first six innings of the 41 AL victory. http://www.boston.com/allstar99/history/1935.htm
Extractions: Lefty Gomez started and pitched the first six innings of the 4-1 AL victory. The length of Gomez' stint led the National League, which had used more players than the AL in each of the first three games, to press for a rules change that is still in effect: Pitchers are limited to three innings apiece.

Extractions: Pitcher New York Yankees Tall and lanky, Vernon "Lefty" Gómez baffled the opposition with a blazing fastball and sweeping curve, while entertaining teammates with his wit and good humor. Remembered mainly for his colorful personality, Lefty Gomez was also one of baseball's greatest winners, ranking third in Yankee history in regular-season wins with 189. (He trails only Whitey Ford and Red Ruffing Gómez was a 20-game winner four times during the 1930s, won ERA titles in 1934 and 1937, and comprised one half of the Yankees' devastating 1-2 punch along with right-hander Ruffing (as a lefty-righty duo, the Dodger duo of Koufax Drysdale and the Atlanta Braves Greg Maddux and Tom Glavine rival them, and maybe Warren Spahn and Johnny Sain in the late 1940s were close Gomez's zaniness set him apart from the decorous Yankees of the 1930s. Extractions: This combination of sound and silent film is now fully narrated to identify players and game situations and begins with a run-down on Spring Training news of 1937. Scenes filmed from various Spring Training camps by professional news photographers show in order: the Pirates at San Bernardino with Manager Pie Traynor, coach Honus Wagner, and pitcher Waite Hoyt. Cubs at Catalina Island with manager Charlie Grimm, pitchers Bill Lee, Curt Davis, Larry French, Tex Carleton, Charlie Root, and catcher Gabby Hartnett. White Sox at Brookside Park, Pasadena, with manager Jimmy Dykes. The Red Sox arrive by train at Sarasota, pitcher Lefty Grove. Boston Bees at Waterfront Park, St. Pete, with manager Bill McKechnie and coach Hank Gowdy. New York Yankees at Miller Huggins Field, St. Pete, with manager Joe McCarthy, Tony Lazzeri, Earle Combs, Lefty Gomez, Monty Pearson, Bill Dickey, George Selkirk, and trainer "Doc" Painter. After this 10-minute segment, a piece specifically on the 1937 Yankees is included, showing Yankee Spring Training in more detail and including a brief look at the 1937 World Series. Next is the major part of the 1937 World Series, including pre-game closeups of the managers, celebrities and the two ballparks. (The total World Series footage runs a full 13 minutes.) Fascinating parts include several different views of Joe DiMaggio's first World Series home run (4 different shots show the homer from 4 different angles), the Yankees knocking out Carl Hubbell in game 1, the Giants victory in game 4 and the argument involving umpire Bill Stewart, coach Art Fletcher, McCarthy and Lou Gehrig. Great scenes inside the victorious Yankee locker room show young Joe DiMaggio and veteran Lou Gehrig.

Extractions: January 24, 2003 Courtesy Cal State L.A. Sports Information Office LOS ANGELES Cal State L.A. head baseball coach John Herbold has been selected to receive the 43rd annual Lefty Gomez Award at the American Baseball Coaches Association's Hall of Fame/Coach of the Year Banquet on Saturday, January 3, 2004, in San Antonio, Texas, it was announced by the ABCA. Entering his 20th season as the head coach of the Golden Eagle baseball program and 48th overall as a head baseball coach in Southern California, Herbold has been head coach for an amazing 1,025 games at CSULA and a total of 1,684 games in his career as a head coach at either the high school or college level. Two of the many accomplishments during Herbold's tenure as head coach of the Golden Eagles include becoming the winningest coach in CSULA history by surpassing the legendary Jim Reeder (for whom the Cal State L.A. baseball field is named) on February 10, 2002, and coaching his 1,000th game at the helm of CSULA on March 16, 2002. Since Herbold's arrival at Cal State L.A., the Golden Eagles have compiled 13 20-win seasons, tying the record set by Reeder in that category, and have sent plenty of CSULA alums to the professional ranks. Cal State L.A. consistently ranks among the top 25 schools in the nation regardless of division in sending players to the pros.

The Baseball Guru - LEFTY O'DOUL By John B. Holway Grove, Charlie Gehringer, Al Simmons, lefty gomez, Connie Mack Japanese researcherssuggest that lefty's love affair with Japan may have gone beyond baseball. http://baseballguru.com/jholway/analysisjholway23.html
Extractions: John Holway the japanese insider LEFTY O'DOUL By John B. Holway Some time this summer Lefty O'Doul will enter the pantheon of Japan's Hall of Famers. He certainly was one of the important figures in the development of the Japanese professional game, and he made a key contribution to one of the ten best games ever played in Japan, a game I saw back in 1953. Lefty first visited Japan many times between 1934 and 1953. Was it his love of the game or something else that drew him back again and again? O'Doul first visited Japan in 1934 with Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Lefty Grove, Charlie Gehringer, Al Simmons, Lefty Gomez, Connie Mack etc. They won 17 straight including 1-0 over teenager Eiji Sawamura, who whiffed Ruth, Gehrig, Foxx, and Gehringer in a row. He returned after the war with his San Francisco Seals in 1949, and again in 1951 with an all-star squad including Joe DiMaggio, who hit the last home run of his career on the tour. Lefty made his last visit with DiMag and Marilyn Monroe in 1953. After a tour in Korea, I was stationed in Tokyo that autumn, when Leo Durocher and the NY Giants visited. That spring the Kyojin (Giants) had taken spring training in America. They won only one exhibition, 9-7 over New York when little shortstop Saburo Hrai hit a two-run homer. A little submarine baller, Tatsumi Otomo, beat Sacramento of the Pacific Coast League but lost to the St Louis Browns 40-3. They must have learned something, though, because they came home and won the pennant by 16 games. Otomo won 27 games and lost seven in the short (130-game) season, plus three more wins in the Japan Series.
