Extractions: The Sporting News It's here! Download your fantasy baseball draft kit today. Hey gang, we soon will be introducing a new game that lets you take your knowledge of the big leagues to a new level. Strat-O-Matic, based on the 41-year-old game played with cards and dice, is simulated baseball at its best. Using data from the 2001 season, Strat-O-Matic breaks baseball into percentages and allows owners to play simulated games. When selecting your players and playing the season, you'll have to factor in facets such as ballpark and weather effects and pitcher fatigue. Each ballplayer's Strat-O-Matic card includes realistic ratings in every key category, from bunting ability to clutch hitting to defensive range, based on 2001 stats and/or raw skills. Nothing is left out in Strat-O-Matic baseball. It's a dream game for the stat nut and baseball fan alike. Here's the kicker: For the first time ever, you can test your simulation baseball and managerial skills while competing online against your peers. From the comfort of your computer, you draft a unique 25-man squad no shared players within a salary cap and pick your home ballpark. You also get to set your starting lineups, including vs. righties and vs. lefties, and managerial tendencies (aggressive on the basepaths, when to bunt, etc.), which can be adjusted throughout the season. Your team will fly through a 162-game season (including playoffs) in just nine weeks, complete with game recaps and box scores.

Extractions: When the Rangers hire Jamey Newberg as their next GM, I hope he'll remember the little people. One of the joys of following the Rangers from a distance is his Web site, NewbergReport.com ; the sooner the team gets to know it, the better. The Rangers made several moves this off-season. They let Ivan Rodriguez go, and he's now a Marlin. They signed John Thomson and re-upped on Ismael Valdes; the back of the rotation is still unsettled and may be decided more by whether or not a pitcher has options left than by talent. The fruits of a talented farm system are beginning to bloom. However, the most significant move made in the off-season came early and quietly when former Devil Rays trainer Jamey Reed replaced longtime trainer Danny Wheat. Reed is currently the President of Professional Baseball Athletic Trainers Society and well regarded by all in the field. If Reed can reduce the frequency and severity of injuries this year, he'll be worth a couple games in the standings. At the start of the season, the Rangers find players like Jeff Zimmerman, Rusty Greer, and Ryan Ludwick already on the shelf for most if not all of the coming season. It's always better to know early when someone's going to be out that long. The worst injuries are season-enders in April, when teams are reluctant to deal and are forced to panic. The Rangers pretty much know what they have and what's at risk.

Extractions: Glanville passes on some of his messages on this cool February morning when he is found via telephone in his home in Teaneck, N.J., the home where has lived his entire life. It is early in February, the month when professional ballplayers prepare to report to their respective teams, and this will not be an ordinary spring training for Glanville - it will be his first in the uniform of his favorite boyhood team, the Philadelphia Phillies. The Phillies traded All-Star second-baseman Mickey Morandini to the Chicago Cubs during the offseason for the rights to Glanville, and he will be competing with All-Star Len Dykstra in the coming weeks for the starting centerfield job. The kid from Teaneck who was called too smart to play the game of baseball has made it to the big time. From the age of four, Glanville was groomed to be a ballplayer. Not by his parents or a neighborhood coach, but by his brother, Ken, who is nearly eight years older than Doug. Ken started his younger sibling on whiffle ball and things took off from there. Ken breathed baseball growing up and Doug simply followed suit. From Strat-oMatic games to keeping score to attending professional tryouts together, it was Ken and Doug and baseball. Nothing stopped their dreams.

Extractions: The day after we caught up with Doug Glanville, EAS'92, at the Phillies' spring-training camp in Clearwater, Fla., The Philadelphia Inquirer ran a story that began: "Lenny Dykstra or Doug Glanville in center? The Phillies' manager is agonizing over it." Three days later, the headline read: "Fallout hits Phillies camp," and an Inquirer columnist was gleefully describing how he had "heard the new kid in town, Doug Glanville, stand at his locker and joke that he'd ruled out trying to resolve this mess by pulling a Tonya Harding." Actually, that same columnist added, "Glanville has been as patient and rational as a guy could be. He knows that no matter who plays opening day, the future still belongs to him." As it turns out, the future is now. By the time Dykstra's surgically-repaired back finally gave out on him in the third week of March, prompting him to suggest that his retirement was imminent, Glanville had already dazzled his new team with his hitting and fielding. Halfway through the spring-training season, he was hitting a lusty .353 and had made some great catches in center. ("Spectacular," was the verdict of manager Terry Francona after one running catch. "That's why we got him. What he can do in center field, we haven't seen in a while.") After a brilliant career at Penn that included a spot on the GTA Academic All-America First Team, Glanville was signed in the first round of the 1991 draft by the Chicago Cubs. He did his time in the minors, riding the buses and learning how to hit the professional curve ball, and after a fair rookie year in 1996, when he hit .241, he turned it up a few notches, hitting .300 last year, stealing 19 bases, and impressing just about everyone with his quick, fluid defense.
