Extractions: After doing some research on Pete Rose and his record-breaking 4,192nd hit in 1985, I came to a strange realization. Rose collected his hit on September 11. Some of you may not like where I'm going with this, but please let me continue. Ease up on the urge to email me, blasting me for comparing baseball to America's most tragic terrorist attack. Not only would that comparison be ridiculous, it'd be callous. This column won't go down that road. However, it will discuss how the date 9/11, now associated with doom worldwide, has somewhat of a doomed history in major league baseball.

Never in history had an All Star game gone beyond five innings without a run. This year no one would score until the thirteenth! O zzie Virgil singled to center. Lee Smith struck out trying to bunt and Hubie Brooks singled Virgil to second. Willie McGee flied out and Tim Raines drilled his third hit of the game, a two-run triple to left-center. F or the National League, the dominant pitchers were Mike Scott, Rick Sutcliffe, Orel Hershiser, Rick Reuschel, John Franco, Steve Bedrosian, Lee Smith and Sid Fernandez. F or the American League, it was Bret Saberhagen, Jack Morris, Mark Langston, Dan Plesac, Dave Righetti and Tom Henke. T he so-called "power hitters" from both leagues were being shut down repeatedly and the fans were beginning to get disappointed in their weak performances at the plate. Many missed the excitement of homeruns and scoring derbies that were supposed take place during the meetings of the league's top sluggers. The pitchers on the other hand, weren't complaining.

Extractions: SCORING OPTIONS and CATEGORIES Scoring Styles A full list of our scoring options would be difficult to compile to post, as we generally can accomodate anything that can be explained to us. Some basic styles and a partial list of categories is presented here. Rotisserie Style The standard baseball style, where statistics for various categories are acculumated throughout the season, and points awarded by ranking the teams in the categories. Only the final, end-of-season results count. Fantasy Style This is basically a 'most points wins' style game, where points are awarded each week of the season for various level of performances, and the team which accumulates the most total points in declared the winner Head to Head Games A new way to play fantasy baseball is head-to-head each week vs a single opponent, with a 'win' given to the better team, and standings based on win-loss records. This usually involves divisional play and a play-off system during the last several weeks of the MLB season. Scoring can be done in a variety of ways: Category Comparison In this style of play opponents performances in a variety of categories are compared, with the better team in each category given number of points for winning that category. With 9 categories, a typical game score is then 6-3.
