His home run broke a scoreless tie, gave Pedro the victory and punctuated a series triumph at Yankee Stadium. Fans love him; friends of mine want me to eat crow for suggesting a year ago that Trot would never even be a league-average right fielder. But is Trot Nixon overrated? Don't get me wrong, I ask the question not out of spite. I actually do want to be wrong about Trot, as much as I want a certain magazine's World Series prediction to be correct. The problem with following baseball too long is that the limitations of one's own favorite teams become all too clear. As if to answer my question, a certain other web site provides convenient links to player stats by league and position. Without further ado, here's a table of regular American League right fielders and their 2000 performance through the end of May:

Keep Off The Grass? Not For Jay Buhner new park. Safeco Field was not built for jay buhner. Not exactly, anyway. And we of grass. baseball the way it ought to be. No one http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/safeco/openingday/vecs153.shtml
Extractions: SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER COLUMNIST Cold weather. Hot weather. Rain or sun. Roof open or roof closed. Doesn't matter. "I'm playing, regardless," Jay Buhner said yesterday with a cat-ate-the-bird grin creeping out from somewhere in the middle of that famous Buhner goatee. As if they were going to be able to keep him off the field. As if there was any chance the Mariners right fielder was going to stay off the grass. On the eve of a historic Seattle sporting moment, after two months on the disabled list with a strained hamstring, Buhner's marvelous recovery comes just in the nick of time. This week, in the wake of an on-field brawl that left Mariners outfielders Charles Gipson and Brian Hunter injured and on the disabled list, Buhner submitted to two rounds of hail-Mary acupuncture sessions and says he's fine. Not 100 percent, but fine. "I've got the green light," he said. "I know it would have been crazy to rush back just to play, but I would have done it anyway." As if there were any chance he was going to say anything else.

Desktop SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER COLUMNIST It bothered some people when Jay Buhner struck out. He would get up to the plate with two outs and a man in scoring position, and he'd take a whopping cut and miss. Sometimes he shook his head. Sometimes he wouldn't. Always he figured he would get 'em next time. You could hear a few fans grumble, thinking: Why is he wasting an out like that? Contrary to that opinion, it never seemed to me that Jay Campbell Buhner wasted anything during his years as a major leaguer. He tore up his knees, ankles, elbow, shoulders and pants chasing down sinking line drives. He skidded onto rock-hard AstroTurf and tumbled over Fenway's right-field wall. And if his home-run swings generated more breeze than a Kingdome air conditioner, well, live with it.

April 2, 2002 - Jay Buhner Day For men like jay buhner, baseball is so much more than a game or aliving, it's a love. Bob Finnigan. For those of you unfamiliar http://www.musingthemariners.com/april22002.htm
Extractions: photo: AP/ElaineThompson "Starting next season, the Mariners will have a little less heart and a little less history, and a lot more hair. Jay Buhner has decided to retire." Bob Finnigan, sportswriter "He tore up his knees, ankles, elbow, shoulders and pants chasing down sinking line drives. He skidded onto rock-hard AstroTurf and tumbled over Fenway's right-field wall. And if his home-run swings generated more breeze than a Kingdome air conditioner, well, live with it. This was the Jay Buhner way. This was his job: to clock homers and drive in runs, though he did more than that. He was much more, the way long-time, one-franchise icons like Kirby Puckett, Tony Gwynn and Cal Ripken were much more, because of the way they represented themselves, and their team, and the game they played. If Buhner was originally a Yankee, it was only long enough to enhance the times he went back to the Bronx and murdered them. There were many memorable moments in Buhner's major league career. The three consecutive 40-homer seasons, and the 310 homers, and the way he became the answer to the best trivia question ever uttered on Seinfeld." -Laura Vecsey, sportswriter
