Extractions: Hall of Fame induction 1970 232/300 ballots cast (77.33%) Son of a semi-pro ball player, Lou Boudreau was one of the best shortstops ever to grace a baseball diamond. Known for smart play and ability more than agility, Boudreau led AL shortstops in fielding percentage 8 times during his career, including his first full season, 1940, and also 1941-1944, 1946-1948. A seven-time All-Star (1940-1944, 1947-1948), his career fielding percentage was .973, at the time a record for major league shortstops. Aside from his excellent fielding, Boudreau was also an excellent hitter, leading the league in 1944 when he batted .327, and leading the league with 45 doubles in 1941 while also knocking 8 triples and 10 home runs. Incidentally he had also batted 46 doubles in 1940. He ranks 7th all-time in career batting average and on-base percentage for shortstops, and ranks 8th in slugging percentage. Boudreaus' first major league appearance came in 1938 when he appeared once as a pinch-hitter, and he was called-up permanently in 1939. During his third full season, at age 24, Boudreau was named player-manager of the Cleveland Indians which made him the youngest start-of-season manager in baseball history. It was Boudreau who later oversaw Bob Lemons' transition from an outfielder to a pitcher.
