That all changed Friday, however, when it was reported that the Orioles were close to a deal with Aaron Sele, who was also considering Tampa Bay. Having lost out on Sele, the Devil Rays signed Juan Guzman. Elsewhere, the Cardinals signed Andy Benes and the A's re-signed Omar Olivares, neither of whom appears to have received much attention elsewhere. Juan Guzman, Tampa Bay

Extractions: Another Piece of the Puzzle No, I did not send Rob Neyer an angry email. A day after he singled me out for purported "brilliance" (regarding an entry here in the Big Bad Blog about the Oakland A's performance in bases-loaded situations during 2000), Rob tried to sneak a reference to pitch counts over the outside corner. Now, Rob can write whatever he wants. And, yes, I know that's mighty big of me to say so. But what was curious about it was that the reference was to a pitcher (the Astros' Wade Miller ) that we'd mentioned here several weeks earlier. While being somewhat disappointed that Rob returned to the issue in a rather superficial way, I was far more disappointed that he didn't see fit to adopt my new term for pitchers with high pitch-per-start averages. Imagine the boost to my ego if Rob had picked up on that, right there in his column:

CREATiVESPORTS - Fantasy Baseball Review - Grab Bag Since his callup from the minor leagues about one month ago, AndyBenes has been the talk of baseball. How could a soon to be 35 http://www.creativesports.com/fbr/grabbag020815.shtml
Extractions: Note: Seth Trachtman is the insider at Fantasy Insights Baseball Since his call-up from the minor leagues about one month ago, Andy Benes has been the talk of baseball. How could a soon to be 35-year-old who has been terrible over the past two years and had chronic knee problems pitch better than he ever has in his career? It is simple, the splitter. Try to rewind to April 15. Benes had just completed his third start of the season where he gave up three earned runs and seven unearned runs in just three innings of work. After that start the Cardinals knew Benes was finished. Even Benes had his own doubts. Over the next month the Cardinals attempted to get Benes to go on the 60-day DL so that their insurance policy would kick in, and they would not have to pay the six million dollars left on his contract. Benes refused because he thought that he still could pitch and be effective. Having their doubts, the Cardinals sent Benes down to the minor leagues to see what he could do. In five starts between two levels Benes had an ERA of nearly 5.00. Without anyone better, the Cardinals were still forced to recall Benes and enter him into the starting rotation in July.
