The Sox won the championship in the top-flight of 18-and-older teams, defeating the Colorado Reds 19-1. The Cardinals were just as dominating in the championship of the 40-and-older tournament, downing the Los Angeles Angels 11-0. "Playing the Astros again was a concern because they had a good tournament as well," Sox manager Dave DAmbrosio said. "They had a good pitching staff, and their only losses (in Phoenix) were to us." "It just seemed to all come together for us," DAmbrosio said. "This is what we have been playing for since team meetings in February, and it all just kind of fell together for us." Founded by Pocket Area resident Carl Boyer and Jim Hill of Marysville, the Cardinals won the NABA title with a 23-1 record. They won 28 of 30 NABA baseball games before playing in Phoenix. In the national tournament, the Cardinals won seven of eight games, outscoring opponents 106-28. "When we first went there, we thought we would win it," said Boyer, who co-manages with Hill. "But we underestimated the talent. We had a tough fight all the way through."

There are frequent sell-outs of 3,000-plus fans. Big Jim Whatley's back-to-back SEC champions of 1953-54 had big crowds but their old grandstand, then located where Stegeman Coliseum is now, seated only half as many as does the resplendent concrete structure at Foley Field, the Dogs' home since 1966 that was renovated in 1990 at a cost of $3.5 million. Fans often ask me these days about Georgia's most famous championship baseball teams of the past: 1908 (20-2) which produced our first major leaguer (Claude Derrick of the 1910-11 world champion Philadelphia Athletics) and H.J. Stegeman's 1919 team (16-4), which swept the four-game championship series with Georgia Tech, humiliating the Yellow Jackets so badly that they wouldn't play Georgia in any sports for six years. I didn't see those teams play, first having seen the light of day in 1921, but I knew many of the players later on and am much aware of their outstanding accomplishments.

The Cream Citys joined the young National League in 1878 but went bankrupt after only one NL season. National League ball returned in 1953 with the Braves and again this year with the Brewers. When the Milwaukee Brewers switched from the American to the National League in 1998, many said baseball in the city was merely returning to its roots. Even some who said that likely didn't know how right they were. True, the Milwaukee Braves had played in the National League from 1953 to 1965, but the Milwaukee Cream Citys were playing National League ball back when horses and buggies carried fans to games.

Extractions: The City of Philadelphias first legal baseball game between major league teams on a Sunday occurred on April 8, 1934. The hometown exhibition game between the Athletics and Phillies took place at Shibe Park, and 15,000 saw the Phillies win 8-1. George M. Mawhinney of The Philadelphia Inquirer noted that, in spite of his teams defeat, the day, the crowd, the gate, the game and the law that last fall legalized Sunday sports were all declared a most signal success by no less a personage than the lank Cornelius McGillicuddy. Connie Mack was a vigorous and long-time proponent of Sunday baseball, and this 1934 game was the culmination of many years of campaigning by the Athletics to legalize baseball on the Sabbath in Philadelphia. But, it was a hard-won victory filled with many difficulties, frustrations and disappointments for supporters of Sunday baseball. The origins of the fight for Sunday baseball go back to 1794 when legislators in the Pennsylvania Assembly passed an Act for the prevention of vice and immorality, and of unlawful gaming, and to restrain disorderly sports and dissipation on the Lords Day. Popularly known as the Sunday Blue Laws, this Act and even more restrictive laws passed in the 19th century had a powerful influence on Pennsylvanians well into the 20th century. Yet, dramatic changes were underway in American Society during the later decades of the 19th century, the pace of which accelerated as a new century dawned. Urbanization, industrialization and immigration brought a profoundalbeit gradualrelaxation in the strict adherence to the Blue Laws. A new Sabbath concept that allowed recreation and games was reflected in the fact that Sunday professional baseball became increasingly common throughout the country as the 20th century progressed.

Ball shows minimal natural discoloration. Notes: The 1930 Athletics finished at 102-52, eight games ahead of Washington and sixteen ahead of the Yankees. In that year's World Series they defeated the St. Louis Cardinals four games to two, to claim their second consecutive world championship. Al Simmons and Jimmie Foxx were among the league's best hitters, but the team's greatest star was Grove. In a year in which all circumstances conspired to favor the hitter - the ball may have been livened to enhance the game's appeal in the face of the Depression - Grove was sensational, winning twenty-eight games with an earned run average more than two runs lower than that of the league. The Athletics went on to win a third consecutive pennant in 1931, but as the Depression deepened and attendance continued to sink, Mack deemed it necessary to begin peddling his stars; by 1935 the club had settled at the bottom of the league.

Baseball has been called America's national pastime, and for more than 150 years people of all ages have enjoyed playing or watching the game all over the world. Every year more than 70 million spectators attend games played by the major league teams in North America and by professional teams around the world, especially in Japan. In addition, millions more watch games played in the minor leagues and by organized teams of semiprofessional and amateur men and women. Radio and television stations carry play-by-play accounts of games. Newspapers and sports magazines report results and records in great detail. This great popularity makes baseball a big business as well as a sport. The two North American major leagues receive billions of dollars a year from admissions, the sales of food and drink and other concessions, and television and radio broadcast rights. The television rights alone bring in more than a billion dollars a year. Expenses, however, are also high. Outstanding player prospects receive enormous bonuses to sign with a team. The player payrolls of major league teams average millions of dollars a year. Baseball players on the average receive the highest salaries in professional sports, and some are rewarded with eight-figure multiyear contracts.
