Extractions: CHICAGO Cornelius, 13, loves all kinds of outdoor sports, especially baseball, football and soccer. He also enjoys the outdoors, hot dogs and hip-hop music. Recently, he had the chance to go behind the scenes at Comiskey Park. There, he met some of the White Sox players who bring such summer excitement to Chicago's south side. When his feet hit the field for the first time, this 13-year-old beamed and he thought Comiskey Park was a slice of heaven. Standing on the field, he was asked what was going through his mind. Cornelius responded, "Being a famous star." After checking everything out including the infield grass, he headed to the dugout and a special surprise: a tour by Sox shortstop Royce Clayton. Clayton had some special Sox memorabilia for Cornelius and plenty of great stories about playing ball in the major leagues. They then got out of the rain and inside to play catch. Cornelius loved it and, as they played, he talked about what he does best: hitting the baseball and playing video games.

Extractions: Baseball Home Back to Game Results Links Howard had another big inning in the top of the fifth scoring 5 runs on 4 hits. Cornelius worked 5 innings, giving up 8 hits, and striking out 6. The Hawks trailed until the sixth, when Ken Gilliam led off with a walk, and advanced to third on Jeff Marquart's third hit of the day, a ground rule double. Konapelsky drove Gilliam in with a single and sent Marquart to third. Brian Heinz sent a first pitch sacrifice fly deep to centerfield to score Jeff from third with the tying run. In the fifth, Scott Curtin went to second base replacing Bednarczyk and Curt Gilliam replaced Dave Marquart at third. Ben Trapuzzano moved from short to the mound in the sixth, with Cornelius going to short. Ben gave up only 1 hit and no runs in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings, with 3 strikeouts. The game stayed tied, 8-8, until the bottom half of the eighth. With one out, Trapuzzano reached first on a walk and stole second. He went to third on Konapelsky's third hit, a single. Brian Heinz loaded the bases when he was hit by a pitch. After a second out pop up to first, Wes McCoy, on a 2-2 count, rolled a slow grounder to short. As Heinz ran toward second, the shortstop rushed his throw a little and the ball went wide of the bag, allowing Ben to score the winning run. Just as important as the Hawks production of 9 runs off 11 hits was the outstanding behind-the-plate work of catcher Nick Madiou. Nick threw out 2 Howard runners trying to steal second base and, just as important, blocked literally dozens of balls in the dirt.

Extractions: Baseball Home Back to Game Results Links River Hill played its first regular season game at Long Reach on March 22. Gusting winds brought the wind chill down to well below freezing and pitchers had a hard time controlling the ball. In the first inning, the Hawks jumped out to a 10 run lead. Lead-off batter Ben Trapuzzano walked, followed by singles from Brian Heinz and Justin Bilohlavek. Wes McCoy then doubled. Kevin Marrie reached first on a passed ball third strike and Mike Anton bunted safely. Greg Roach ran for Anton. Dave Marquart pushed in another run with a bases loaded walk, and Scott Curtain drove in two with a single. Jeff Marquart then cleared the bases with a triple and scored when Ben Trapuzzano followed with another triple. Brian Heinz drove Trapuzzano in with his second single of the inning and then stole second. Bilohlavek followed with a double, and a ground out by McCoy scored Heinz. Long Reach got four back in the bottom of the first.
