Baseball By The Numbers -Home Runs - Rick Gilbertson become the greatest single season home run hitter in baseball history. harold baines,Gary Gaetti Daryl Strawberry, Chilli Davis and perhaps even Cecil Fielder http://www.allsports.com/mlb/redsox/bbtnhra.htm
Extractions: Early last season, Mark McGwire joined an elite class he and 25 others are the only players in MLB history to club as many as 400 homers in a career. McGwire the active home run leader has come back from a couple of injury riddled seasons to re-establish himself as the games premier Sultan of Swat. McGwire belted 70 during the 1998 season to become the greatest single season home run hitter in Baseball history. At the prolific rate that the original Bash Brother hits them he could hit 500 by the end of August 1999 and as long as he's healthy McGwire will reach 600 and truly elite status amongst the all-time Sultans of Swat. Another players who reached the 400 club in 1998 is Barry Bonds, he stands 26'th on the all-time listwith 411 career blasts. Jose Canseco and Joe Carter will most certainly crash the 400 barrier during 1999 and Cal Ripken at 384 career bombs could climb into the 400 club with 16, which for Ripken is realistic but no longer a given. Bonds will someday celebrate his 500'Th and certain HOF status, while Joe Carter will have to have several Eddie Murray type years at the end of his career if he is to reach that plateau. Cal Ripken if he doesn't eventually break down will methodically climb into the 500 club, but even if Ripken breaks down and doesn't make 500 - he's already assured his place in Cooperstown.

Extractions: Modern era: Rogers Hornsby Home runs: The question is, "How long before someone breaks Barry Bond's 73 HR record?" Maybe Sosa or Griffey next? Maybe Bonds again. Prior to McGwire 's and Sosa 's record breaking '98 season of 70 and 66 HR's respectively, Roger Maris , 61 HR's in 1961 (162-game season), and Babe Ruth , 60 HR's in 1927 (154-game season), "shared" the record. Poor Roger always gets an asterisk by his record because he had a longer season. On one hand he held the ML HR record for almost 40 years and was league MVP twice, but he was a lifetime .260 hitter in 12 seasons hitting over 20 HR's only in four other seasons. Maris and Ruth were helped by Yankee stadium's famous "short porch" in right field. Ruth played when the right field foul line was 295 feet away, but it was 487 to center! It was 315 down the line for Maris. Although both did hit about half their home runs in other stadiums during their record-setting years.
