Product Description
Many have said Johnny Unitas was the best quarterback who ever played the game. No less an authority than Sports Illustrated thinks so. In a 2002 statistical analysis of NFL Hall of Fame quarterbacks and active quarterbacks with HOF credentials, Unitas was ranked #1. Johnny U was also the hero of untold millions of youths who spent countless hours in their backyards emulating the stoop-shouldered, rifle-armed legend who wore the familiar 19 on his jersey.

Johnny Unitas’s story is a classic rags-to-riches tale. The skinny, blue-collar kid who played college ball at a little-known school and failed in a tryout with his hometown pro team was given a second chance by the Baltimore Colts. Two years later he led the team to victory in the 1958 NFL Championship game, a game dubbed the greatest ever played. Unitas played eighteen seasons (and in ten Pro Bowls), retiring in 1973 as the league’s all-time leader in passing yards with more than 40,000. His unsurpassed record of forty-seven consecutive games with at least one touchdown pass continues to be mentioned in the same breath as baseball icon Joe DiMaggio’s fifty-six-game hitting streak.

When Unitas unexpectedly died in September 2002, the sports world mourned the passing of a genuine sports hero. In Johnny Unitas: Mr. Quarterback, dozens of his friends, neighbors, acquaintances, relatives, fans, and teammates present compelling firsthand memories, insights, and testimonials. Their stories begin with his schoolboy days in Pittsburgh and carry on to his years of toiling in near anonymity at the University of Louisville and his nearly two decades in the NFL and beyond. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars The Good the Bad and the Ugly.
This book may be about the Best Quarterback in the history of the NFL, BUT it is by far the poorest written book I have ever read. The grammer, organization, detail and writing in general is the worst I've ever seen. I couldn't figure out if the book was written for a six year old or by a six year old or both. I am still a huge fan of Johhy U. and have been since the mid 60's, but for future book buys, I'm watching out for this author.

4-0 out of 5 stars CREW CUT AND HIGH TOPS
THIS IS ABOUT JOHN UNITAS FORMER NFL GREAT. THE BOOK CONATINS MANY STORIES AND INSIGHTS BY VARIOUS RELATIVES TEAMATES AND FRIENDS OF JOHNNY U. SOME OF THE MANY WHO CONTRIBUTED THEIR STORIES ABOUT UNITAS ARE TOM MATTE, DON SHULA, LENNY MOORE AND SAM HUFF. I FOUND THIS TO BE A NICE BUT NOT TOO DETAILED BOOK ABOUT UNITAS. I THINK HIS TOUGHNESS, LACK OF EGO AND PURE TALENT WERE THE MAIN ISSUES IN MOST OF THESE INTERESTING STORIES. NOT A GREAT BOOK BUT A VERY INTERESTING AND NOSTALGIC TRIP FOR ALL COLT FANS. RECOMENDED. ... Read more

Product Description
Johnny Unitas was and forever will be the quintessential football hero. He was a fearless competitor and a legendary leader. His crewcut, black, high-topped shoes, and golden arm are forever etched in our minds as symbols of greatness for a league he led to prominence. But Unitas’ road to stardom was filled with adversity that helped shape him as a football player and as a man. Johnny Unitas: America’s Quarterback is the only work of its kind that adequately explores both the heroic and human sides of an American legend. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst Book Ever
The author of this book does little work and he basically wrote the same thing over again, "the greatest quarterback that ever lived threw an amazing pass for a touchdown to win the game and be a hero."no insight, barely any detail, glances over Unitas's private life.the worst.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not Great, but Not That Bad, Either
I received this book as a Christmas gift in 2005, and just got around to reading it......and I have to admit that when I was done, I had enjoyed it.I was rather stunned when I got on Amazon.com after I had finished the book to read the obviously disappointed other reviews.Didn't I see what the other reviewers had seen?I guess I just liked the Colts and Unitas so much back then (I'm now 57) that I enjoyed being able to read about my favorite player.I enjoyed the stories and appreciated the ending interview and the extensive statistics.

What the Amazon reviews (and a subsequent "Unitas" search) did, however, was guide me to and influence me to buy Tom Callahan's "Johnny U," which was released in 2006.I LOVED that book. The Sahadi book is more "sports reporter" oriented, with game details and stories, while the Callahan book is more "sports writer" oriented, with input from a lot of player and friend interviews and personal insight. If I had to have only one, I'd pick the more personal and touching Callahan book, but I've got both, and I am glad I do.Together, they cover what I wanted to know -- the personal side, the game details, and the statistics.

2-0 out of 5 stars Underwhelming biography of the one of the greats
It's sad to say, but this biography of Johnny Unitas, arguably the greatest quarterback ever to lace up cleats, is woefully unimpressive.Lou Sahadi's remembrance of the famous `Johnny U' seems like it was put together by a high school student who put wrote an outline of Unitas' career and then went to Wikipedia to get enough information to expand the outline and get a passing grade from his teacher. There are absolutely no revelations to be found in the pages of this book.It is so slight in its substance that you actually have to consult Wikipedia to get more information. Its narrative flow is also so poor that reading this book is a chore. There is nothing about his relationships with his teammates and coaches that can't be gleaned from other sources. Each chapter seems to deal with one aspect of Unitas' career (from the early days a Louisville all the way through his unceremonious finale in San Diego), but seems impatient to move on to the next.

"...America's Quarterback" is not a total turkey, so it avoids the dreaded 1-star rating, but the overall average rating of 1.5 stars seems about right. You would hope that anyone who takes the time of writing a book about Johnny Unitas would put the effort in the plow new ground or provide a compelling story.Unfortunately, Sahadi does neither, and this book suffers tremendously because of that.

1-0 out of 5 stars Big Disappointment
I wish this weren't the case, because I grew up idolizing Unitaas, but this book is awful! As the other reviewers have noted, it presents almost no information on Unitas.Almost the whole book revolves around the plays in various championship games.I am amazed it was published -- I haven't read a worse sports "biography."The only interesting part of the book was the interview with Unitas, where he described some funny things about his teammates. These are things we shuold have learned about Unitas himself.

3-0 out of 5 stars Chronicle of Unitas andColts from old school sportswriter
Traces history of Unitas and the Baltimore Colts from the early 50's and the two NFL Championships in '58 and '59 through the Championship loss in Cleveland in 1964 including the '69 and '70 Superbowls up until Johnny leaves for San Diego in 1973.Continues on with Unitas experiencing retirement to his passing on Sept 11, 2002.Championship games described as though you are watching from play to play.Nifty 40 page interview with Unitas and author concludes prose portion.40 more pages of Unitas' stats follows that.Book also includes material on Colts move from Baltimore and Ravens appearance.Fans of football and Baltimre Colts will enjoy reliving the memories. 16 pages of great photos. Required reading for any true Baltimore Colts fan. ... Read more

The last quarterback of the Quarterback Class of 1983 to be taken in the first round, Marino became one of the most prolific quarterbacks in league history, holding or having held almost every major NFL passing record. Despite never being on a Super Bowl-winning team, he is recognized as one of the greatest quarterbacks in American football history. Remembered particularly for having a quick release and a powerful arm, Marino led the Dolphins into the playoffs on numerous occasions. Marino's childhood home in Pittsburgh, PennsylvaniaMarino was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, of Italian and Polish ancestry, and his father delivered newspapers for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. He was the oldest child of Daniel and Veronica Marino, and had two younger sisters, Cindi and Debbie.
