Product Description
In Elway, John shares his life in pictures and words.Joined by award winning photographer Marc Serota (Mario Lemieux: TheFinal Period and Marino: On the Record), Elway captures the incrediblemoments of professional jubilation, as well as the private momentswith family, friends and teammates.Amazon.com Review
An intriguing hybrid, Elway, a coffee-table tribute toone of football's most exciting quarterbacks, is part autobiography, part photographic celebration, and all MTV packaging; like an Elwaycomeback drive, it moves quickly and is filled with exuberance. Thepictures, especially of the Bronco's Super Bowl XXXII upset of theheavily favored Packers, are stunning, and if Elway gets to offer hisshare of clich&eactue;s and life philosophies well protected from theonslaught of any editorial blitz, it's the images that are the heroeshere; the words, like pulling guards, exist only to move thingsforward without drawing much attention to themselves. --JeffSilverman ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Great Pictorial
Nice pictures.Good coffee table book for a guest to your home that might share a love for football or the Broncos. The quality pictures are what makes this book.If you are looking for an in-depth look into the life of Elway, you would need to look elsewhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Elway Story
The name of the book is Elway because it is about him. This book is a good book because he tells about his whole life. There are a lot of good pictures in this book. This is a good book because John Elway wrote it. I like when he broke his leg. It shows you how much he loves the game. The only thing they should of had more of is touch down passes. This book is for all ages.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent pictoral history of Elway's life!
If I was going to rate my personal enjoyment of this book, I'd give it 5 stars, easily -- 6, if I could. However, the critic in me did notice some improprieties. The book reports a few minor factual mistakes. For example, the inner jacket flap mistakenly reports that Elway will be entering (in1998) his 15th NFL season, when in fact it was his 16th.Elway himself atone point confuses the sequence of plays when recalling "TheDrive" in the 1987 AFC Championship. He also claims to have beenahead at halftime in his first two Super Bowls, even when, a few lineslater, he recalls that in his 2nd Super Bowl (against the WashingtonRedskins) the opposing team took the lead in the second quarter.Thereason for these indiscretions is more due to the format of the book than aproblem with Elway's or the editor's memories. This book is autobiographyonly in the loosest of senses; the text is very brief, and in it Elwayoffers his views on his own childhood, his career with the Broncos, thecurrent state of the NFL, and a smattering of personal life philosophy aswell. It is not presented as a comprehensive life story, but more like anextended interview/monologue, and no one but the "statisticshounds" (like me) will even notice the rare and incidental factualerrors. Some of the text also appears to have been lifted from earlierinterviews; at one point, while describing how he dodges defensive ends,Elway refers to a game he played "the other day" in Minnesota, yet at the publication date (early 1998) Elway had not played a game inMinnesota for a year and a half. This book is also very expensive, compared to corresponding books of its type. However, the aforementionedcriticisms are very minor, and if you can get past the cover price, and arean Elway fan, you will love this book.Despite being brief, the text iswritten entirely by John Elway himself (making the book unique, in that noother book offers a wholly first-person perspective of Elway), and doescover his entire life up until the publishing date. The paucity of text inthis oversized book also makes the numerous photographs stand out all themore, and the photographs are beautiful -- like the text, they range allthe way from Elway's childhood to his triumph in Super Bowl XXXII.Despitethe criticisms offered above, this is a very fun book to read and glanceover for the Elway fan.As I said in the beginning, the"objective" side of me noticed a few improprieties in the book, but the "fan" side of me didn't care and loved reading it anyway. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Photographic celebration of John Elway
This book is simply excellent, combining amazing photographs with commentary from the great man himself.

SuperBowl XXXII is extensively covered and there are photos from Johns personal life, growing up andpresent, with his family and around his home. You get to hear John's viewson things away from football also.

I just wish this book could have beenbigger and with more photos from other key points in John's carear, especially the Denver-Cleveland AFC Champ series which are not given enoughdepth.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great summary of #7's life.
For all you Elway fans out there, this book is a keeper. With great photos and words coming right from John himself, you'll love the book. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review
What marches this amply illustrated tribute downfield with theverve of a two-minute drill is the collection of tribute offerersthemselves. John Elway's 10 chapters are built on the testimonyof 10 witnesses--Bronco players and opponents--to the future Hall ofFamer quarterback's excellence, longevity, creativity, and coolness:the lineup includes Denver coaches Dan Reeves and Mike Shanahan;teammates Terrell Davis, Shannon Sharpe, and Ed McCaffrey; andopposition field marshalls Brett Favre and Jim Kelly. Under gameconditions, all would be assessed yardage for piling it on; thenagain, an elegy's game plan is to praise without penalty, and praisethey certainly do.

Still, Elway offers its perspectives, none more cogent than that of defensive lineman Neil Smith, who spentnine seasons as a Chief huffing and puffing after Elway beforeultimately joining him in Denver. "I had the most sacks (15) againstJohn," Smith admits proudly, "and it's probably because he took me toanother level when I played against him... But after you'd sack him, really crush him, he'd just get up and grin... and come back and throwa touchdown on you. That hurt." It also captures Elway's brilliance ina nutshell: his skills made the game better, and his spirit never lethim give up. If that doesn't deserve appreciation, nothing in sportsdoes, and Elway, like a crafty receiver, catches both halves ofthat equation quite nicely. --Jeff Silverman ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Perspective
This is one of the best books one can find about John Elway.Sure, it misses much of the autobiographical details, but it gets down to business quite well, distilling John's football life into its essential components. Its strength arises from diversity of perspective. Not only do you hear Mike Shannahan's memories and opinions, but also Dan Reeve's and the words have a healing effect for us long term fans.Likewise, hearing not only from key Bronco team mates but also from his rivals gives one the complete story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Was a birthday present
I got this book from my wife as a birthday present, and immediately sat down and read it cover to cover. I knew a lot ofthe info in the book already, having been a Bronco fan since 1972, but it did refresh a lot of old (and somewhat painful) memories. I feel this book is a "must have" for any Bronco/Elway fan.

4-0 out of 5 stars good keepsake
Interesting comments from other players, but not a lot of new information for fans who have followed John's career. Nice book to have for a sports collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a Great book for all Broncos fans.A++++
This book (Biography of John Elway) shows not only History of John Elway, but also of his Teamates and other Players around the NFL .This book is loaded with Players, Coaches, and the Owner of the Denver Broncos.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent summary of John Elways career by others
This book offers commentary and descriptins of John Elway by other NFL teammates, players, and coaches.Included are chapters by Mike Shanahan, Terrell Davis, Brett Favre, Dan Reeves, and Clay Matthews (who played forthe Cleveland Browns, against the Broncos in 3 AFC Championship games). Each individual's comments are very interesting, as they all offer adifferent perspective.

The only drawback is that the book appears to havebeen completed before Super Bowl 33; so Dan Reeves does not offer his viewson coaching *against* Elway in a Super Bowl.A minor critique, though, ashe still provides an interesting read.

The book is also filled with manyexcellent photos from Elway's NFL and college days. ... Read more

Product Description

Few athletes attain the status of legend while still playing the game. From the time John Elway first donned the orange and blue of the Denver Broncos in 1983 -- at the head of the awesomely talented quarterback class that included Dan Marino, Jim Kelly, Todd Blackledge, Tony Eason, and Ken O'Brien -- he has been one of those rare figures whose star shines brightest when the pressure is highest. Of the illustrious six taken in that 1983 draft, only Elway can wear a Super Bowl championship ring.

With his strong passing arm and outstanding scrambling ability, Elway quickly established himself as the most dangerons quarterback the game has ever known. Eluding the rush, throwing across the field, making plays that no other quarterback could see much less execute, Elway's patented fourth-quarter heroics carried the Broncos to the brink of greatness year after year. And, at last, in 1997 he got to lead a team that he did not have to carry, that had the running game and defense to enable Elway to be a part of a great team, not to try to lift one singlehandedly.

In John Elway: The Drive of a Champion, the editors of Sports Illustrated have collected the greatest moments from Elway's remarkable career: From his formative years at Stanford University, through his brief flirtation with professional baseball, to such football highlights as The Drive against the Cleveland Browns, and of course substantial coverage of the Broncos' stirring victory in Super Bowl XXXII. With stunning four-color photography and the outstanding writing of Rick Reilly, Rick Telander, Peter King, Michael Silver, and many others, John Elway is an irresistible chronicle of the life and career of a true football immortal. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat incomplete
Considering the wealth of information present in their archives, I would have expected more from the folks at SI for their retrospective of John Elway. All in all, SI writers have been fair and appreciative of John's playing over the years and this book goes even farther, leaving out the worst memories and amping up the best. It's out of print now but can usually be found on Ebay fairly easily.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reprint of early Sports Illustrated articles
This book is not to be missed for John Elway fans.It reprints a total of18 Sports Illustrated articles covering the career of John Elway, rangingfrom 1981 (when he was still a junior at Stanford) to 1998 (his first SuperBowl victory in SB XXXII).Photos that appeared in the original articlesare also reprinted with each story.Left out are what might be termed the"negative" articles (i.e., none of Elway's first 3 Super Bowlsare covered), while several of Elway's more amazing regular season andplayoff victories are reviewed, leaving the reader with an overwhelminglypositive impression. In this book, you can read about how heralded anathlete Elway was all the way back in college, and how his acclaim followedhim through his career in the NFL.One critique I would give this book isthat, for space, all the articles have been edited, and so each chapterincludes several annoying ellipses (...) that let you know you're notreading everything that was originally printed. However, the bulk of thestories are included. If you are interested in reading an objective (i.e.,non Denver beat writer) account of what type of QB John Elway was and howhe helped the Broncos (and the Stanford Cardinals), this book is not to bemissed!

5-0 out of 5 stars Ultimate Elway book for any football fan
This book covers the Elway career from College all the way to the big game in January where he finally got his much deserved Lombardi. It has several excerts and SI Photos from the past. A true collector's item ... Read more

Product Description

For half a century, the Denver Broncos have provided countless thrills, and a few spills, for their devoted fans. The full story of the Broncos’ wild ride— from a decade of losing seasons to mighty dynastic heights—unfolds in all its guts-and-glory drama in this illustrated history. The first complete, illustrated account of this storied team, the book tells how this charter member of the American Football League struggled through its first seasons before emerging as an elite team in the 1970s. Led by the imposing “Orange Crush” defense and quarterback Craig Morton, the Broncos reached their first Super Bowl in January 1978. The arrival of John Elway in 1983 put the Broncos on the road to dynasty, bringing five Super Bowl appearances and back-to-back championships in the late 1990s.  To this day, the team's winning ways draw raucous sellout crowds to Invesco Field at Mile High.

Denver Broncos: The Complete Illustrated History offers a fascinating look at one of football’s most beloved teams, from its early years as Denver’s only major sports franchise, through legendary on-field moments like “The Drive,” to the stars of today. Profiles of star players, season recaps, details of crucial games and plays, and the stories behind the great teams are complemented by hundreds of color and black-and-white images documenting the team’s history.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent read
An excellent account of the Denver Broncos history by a wonderful man who was there!
From the vertical socks ( they look great now!) to the present day, this book is a must for all Bronco fans and football fans alike.
Follow the franchise from it's start in the AFL to the two time Super Bowl winners.
Very well written and hard to put down once you start.Keep it out as a reference book.
Also check out Mr. Saccomano's previous book;"Game of MY Life Denver Broncos: Memorable Stories of Broncos Football.Another great read in the words of the Bronco players from day one to present.

5-0 out of 5 stars Denver Broncos: The Complete Illustrated History
It is a great history of the Denver Broncos. Lots of wonderful black/white and colored photos. Has a really nice Foreword written by John Elway. I would reccommend this coffee table hardback book to anyone who wants to learn more about the Denver Broncos and relive some special moments.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great Book, but Major Error
I bought this book as a birthday gift for my husband, a die-hard Broncos fan. The minute he opened it, he flipped to the back of the book to see where the history "ended".On page 177, the very last page of the book, is a chart detailing the team's win/loss records for each season of the 2000's decade. He immediately noticed that the chart was totally wrong. The data was an exact copy of the win/loss chart from the 1960's decade that is printed earlier in the book.A careless copy/paste error by the designer, no doubt. All the detail had been updated for the "2000's" except the actual stats.Nice.

We contacted the publisher, MVP Books, who was very nice and receptive to our concern. They are aware of the error and will send an updated page with the corrected data. We would much prefer an entirely new book of course, but if this is the best they can do we will have to deal. They said they would not run a reprint until the entire stock is sold - that will take awhile. They also said that there should have been a card tucked inside the book detailing the error and instructions to receive a new page. The book we ordered from Amazon did not have this card. They said we were only the second customer to contact them about the error.

Other than that, this is a great book. If you're willing to overlook one mistake, there is a world of great information, photos, and unique perspectives inside.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great treatise and resource about the Denver Broncos
Wonderfully illustrated and well written history of the Denver Broncos. The chapters about the Broncos' early history evokedmemories, with some not so fond, about the team's early struggles on the football field and front office. The later chapters bring the team's history right up to date.

Jim's book belongs in every Denver Broncos fan's library. Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Company History
One would expect that a book chronicling the history of the Denver Broncos by its long-time and very capable Vice President for Public Relations, Jim Saccomano, would be a treasure. It is.This should be on the bookshelf of every serious Denver Bronco fan, especially those who are not aware of the growth of the Bronco Nation from its early, humble beginnings to becoming the prominent and successful franchise it is today.Saccomano tells a richly illustrated story of Denver football moving from cow town survival to the football pinnacle. He is on the inside of the franchise and he tells the story with family pride in a little over 175 pages of prose and pictures, including a warm introduction by its Hall of Fame Quarterback, John Elway.

Surprisingly, there are over a dozen books telling the history of the Denver Broncos, with editions running the gamut from being primarily coffee table photography souvenir books (gradually moving from black-and-white to color photography as the years go by), to books for grade school libraries, and a couple of books with few pictures written by talented journalists and writers. Most of these books are now out-of-print, but made the storytelling of the early years much easier for Saccomano. He nicely adds a modern touch to the story of the early years, for example, by revisiting modest former Broncos practice and administrative facilities during the writing of the book.

Saccomano chose to divide the history by decades, similar to the style adopted by Broncos: Three Decades of Football, which makes sense for a book celebrating the Broncos 50th Anniversary.Other books have organized the history by owners, coaches, or eras of accomplishment, i.e., getting to a winning season, getting to the Super Bowl, and eventually winning the Super Bowl.

While Saccomano celebrates the accomplishments of the Broncos franchise, it is clear that he is writing from the perspective of a spokesperson for the current Bronco organization. The reader will find little dissension in "Dove Valley" (the practice complex for the Broncos) even in 2009, the most melodramatic off-season soap opera year in Denver Bronco history. In the book, coaches rise with great applause in the beginning, yet fall most quickly. You will find not a scintilla of criticism of owner Patrick Bowlen, nor a complete examination of what truly unfolded for Bowlen's "coach for life" Mike Shanahan to lose his job after a .500 season.

So, to some degree, this is a positive company history, updating several earlier Broncos-sponsored books, not objective history written by an outsider. It is not the definitive, scholarly, annotated biography of the Denver Bronco Football Club that one may have hoped that Saccomano could have produced, given his knowledge and access to Bronco files.Oddly enough, while credit is given to Bronco photographers (like my fellow Golden High graduate, Eric Bakke), Saccomano gives little recognition to earlier Bronco historians or the legion of outstanding Bronco newspaper beat writers dating from the early days with Dick Connor and Chet Nelson to current Dave Krieger and Jeff Legwold. Some of the prior histories gave Jim Saccomano credit for his help on their books.Maybe the restrictions of the MVP book series, of which this is one team's part, prevented these acknowledgments or reflections, but I found their omission in a comprehensive Broncos history by its chief publicist disappointing.

Minor criticisms aside, Saccomano shows his professional, life long labor of love with the Broncos on every page of this book.It is somewhat unfair to expect him to write critically about the Broncos or its owner when he clearly loves the team and its current owner. This is a fun and very readable book.Every Broncos fan should buy and read it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing with lots of filler and inaccurate in places
Much of this book constitutes reprints of the author's previous articles written about the Broncos earlier superbowl losses. A minority of the book deals with XXXII. Even the portion dealing with the win is inaccurate in spots. For example, the author describes the wrong final play of the game! I mean, how do you screw that up? He also has at least one other important play misdescribed. All in all this clearly appears to be a book thrown together to skim the Denver market. Save your money. ... Read more
