Extractions: (January 26, 1999) Herman Wedemeyer, an All-America football player who retook the national stage three decades later as a regular on "Hawaii Five-O," died Monday, January 25, 1999. He was 74. Wedemeyer died at noon at the Queen's Medical Center of complications from a heart attack, said one of his sisters, Winona Gaison. He suffered a heart attack last week and had been on life support, she said. A native of Hilo, Wedemeyer was also a businessman who served briefly as a Honolulu city councilman and state representative. But he was best known for his performances on the football field as a halfback for St. Mary's College in California and before the cameras as cop "Duke" Lukela in "Hawaii Five-O." Wedemeyer was inducted to the National Football Foundation College Hall of Fame in 1979. In 1945 the famed sportswriter Grantland Rice called Wedemeyer the greatest athlete in the country after he was named to the Associated Press and United Press International All-America teams that year. "Herman was all-around," said former University of Hawaii halfback Tommy Kaulukukui, 84. "He could pass and run. He was a very deceptive kind of runner, fake one way and go the other. They called him Squirmin' Herman."

But Herman Wedemeyer's pioneering accomplishments as a football player in the 1940s made him a legend. His greatest gift to Hawaii came from his time on the football field. "The type of role model that Herman Wedemeyer was, he played the game for all the right reasons because he loved the game," said Russ Francis, who was drafted in the first round (16th overall) by the New England Patriots in 1975. "What he showed a lot of kids in Hawaii like myself, is that we don't have to feel inferior or intimidated by ... athletes on the mainland." Wedemeyer, who died Jan. 25 this year at the age of 74, was an All-American football player at St. Mary's College in California and a regular on television's "Hawaii Five-O," playing Edward D. There are far more local boy football cards than from the other sports combined. A few sons of Hawaii enjoyed marginal careers in major league baseball. Several University of Hawaii basketball players rode benches in the National Basketball Association. Anyone know of any professional hockey players from Hawaii? There have been local boy football cards since 1948, the year that the Exhibit Supply Company of Chicago immortalized the firstand possibly the greatestfootball star to emerge from the Islands: "Squirmin'" Herman Wedemeyer, "The Flyin' Hawaiian." A flamboyant runner, Wedemeyer was a sensation from the moment he donned the uniform of the Crusaders of St. Louis. Then the school was called a college but actually it was one of the eight members of the original ILH (the others being Punahou, Kamehameha, Iolani, McKinley, Roosevelt, Kaimuki, and Farrington). After graduation, Wedemeyer was headed for Notre Dame, but, as he recently told me, his transcript failed to arrive at South Bend, Indiana, in time. "Also," said Wedemeyer, "I knew St. Mary's would be much warmer and closer to home, so I enrolled there."

He was active as a successful amateur golfer familiar in recent years as a marshal and first-tee announcer at the Hawaiian Open and other golf tournaments. Wedemeyer was just as widely known for his part in the cast of the "Hawaii Five-O" television series. He played a Hawaiian policeman, "Duke Lukela," from 1968 until the popular series ended in 1980. He was elected to a term on the City Council and two terms in the state House of Representatives. "After all the years of exposure on 'Five-O,' with people always approaching him, he was still gracious and thanked them for recognizing him," said longtime friend Byron Feldman.
