Extractions: Sports Email This Story Print This Story KANSAS CITY, Mo., 9:47 a.m. EST February 23, 2001 It was about a year ago that a city wept. The sudden passing of one of its favorite sons cut deeply. Understandably so. The death of an athlete forces us all to question our mortality. Part of it is probably because athletes are such amazing physical specimens. Their premature deaths make us seem even more vulnerable. We can't fathom a man so large so seemingly indestructible being cut down in the prime of his life. But in this particular instance, there was more to it. This athlete had connected with a community. He was a hero on the football field and a difference maker off of it. There's no need to rehash the horrible details of that icy Sunday late last January. We know all about the accident, how he had neglected to wear his seat belt and how he was driving a bit too recklessly for the conditions. It was probably that attitude of indestructibility that confidence that was so essential to his success on the gridiron that caused him to take such a chance.

Extractions: Only In America Derrick Thomas' s Mother Sues GM By Brian Carnell Wednesday, November 29, 2000 In February of this year National Football League player Derrick Thomas was killed in an automobile accident. He was speeding on an icy road rushing to make a flight. He lost control of his car and both he and a passenger died when they were thrown out of the car neither was wearing seatbelts. A third passenger, who was wearing his seatbelt, walked away from the crash with only minor injuries. Since this is the United States the course for Thomas's mother was clear sue the maker of the car, General Motors, for her son's irresponsible driving. And for good measure she's suing the ambulance company that arrived on the scene as well as the hospital that tried to keep him alive. Still not quite as bold as the blood sucking lawyers detailed in this San Francisco Chronicle story . In this scam, lawyers wait for a plane to go down, and then sue the airlines claiming they represent a Latin American child who the pilot or one of the passengers had fathered illegitimately. In one case the lawyers made a big mistake the erson they accused of being the father turned out to be a gay man involved in a 20-year-long same sex relationship. Oops.
