Thomas died Tuesday morning in a Miami hospital from complications from his injuries suffered in a car accident Jan. 23. David Eulitt/The Capital-Journal 'A light has gone out' The Capital-Journal When he talked for the last time Monday with the young man he often called "my son," Kansas City Chiefs president Carl Peterson was elated by the upbeat mood he observed in Derrick Thomas. "He was upbeat, he was positive, he was Derrick," Peterson said of his visit with Thomas at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, where the popular Chiefs linebacker was just beginning his rehabilitation from a Jan. 23 auto accident that left him paralyzed below the chest.

Extractions: As you are all probably aware by this time, Derrick Thomas Linebacker for the Kansas City Chiefs has recently died. No one at this writing knows specifically why, but most likely from complications resulting from his near fatal and paralyzing car wreck of a few weeks ago. It is rare in this day and age that a sports figure is revered as highly as Derrick Thomas. Certainly the news about NFL players recently has been peppered with the sad and disturbing news of other highly visible NFL players being charged with wife beating, rape and murder. But no where that I can ever remember was Derrick Thomas name ever associated with this sort of foolishness and disregard for the lives of other human beings. Obviously I did not know Derrick Thomas but I watched and occasionally marveled at his on-field prowess and athletic abilities. I was never fortunate enough to watch him play in person and only managed to catch his on-field talents from the confines of my couch. From that weekly window on the NFL was I able to watch as one man put forth all of his efforts in an attempt to help his team win. And that, I think, is probably his biggest legacy, he played not just to make himself better but to help those around him for a common goal. Of course we are talking about a game and certainly one played by a set of highly skilled and highly paid men trained over the years to use their talents for the single purpose of winning what many call a war. But the difference here is that, at least from this fans point of view, Derrick Thomas played for the good of the whole and not to better his own set of statistics for the ultimate purpose of self-recognition and individual fame.

Extractions: Air Force Special Operations Command Public Affairs ANDREWS AIR FORCE BASE, Md. (AFPN) While attending a conference here, I heard the news that Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Derrick Thomas had died Feb. 8. The professional football player had suffe red a heart attack while recovering from injuries sustained in a car accident. His death doesn't just impact the sports community, it impacts the Air Force family. Maybe once in all our lives we meet a person who touches us in an extraordinary way. They are the true heroes of our world. In 1997, while stationed at Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii, I had the chance to meet Derrick Thomas. The pro football player was in Hawaii for his eighth straight appearance in the Pro Bowl. Though my job as an Air Force public affairs specialist means I often get the chance to interview senior military leaders, rarely do I get the chance to talk with a celebrity or superstar athlete. But, when I learned why Derrick was visiting Hickam I was excited about interviewing him and telling the Air Force his amazing story and the story of his father. Capt. Robert Thomas was a U.S. Air Force pilot on a B-52G Stratofortess when his aircraft was shot down over North Vietnam in 1972 during Operation Linebacker II. The captain was listed as missing in action for nearly six years before his remains were identified through the U.S. Army Central Identification Lab in Hawaii and returned to his family in 1978. Derrick wanted to visit the lab to learn more about a father he never knew and the agency that helped bring his dad home again.

Extractions: Derrick Thomas Age: 32 (deceased) Former Occupation: Linebacker, Kansas City Chiefs; Founder, Third and Long Foundation, a program to help inner-city children learn how to read. Former Residentce: Kansas City, Missouri. Education: University of Alabama, major in criminal justice and social work. Delinquency History: Burglary and auto-theft. Referred to juvenile detention for 30 days, and sent to the Dade Marine Institute, an alternative school for youth for six months. Court ordered restitution on a charge of auto-theft when he was 18. Tears rained down his face as his mother cradled 14-year-old Derrick Thomas, already over six feet tall, in her arms. After years of beating the system, of committing crimes and not getting caught, of conning adults with his engaging smile and winning personality, Thomas' number had finally come up. He was going to juvenile jail. Placed on home confinement while awaiting trial on a burglary charge, his first juvenile court referral, Thomas repeatedly left the house. His pre-trial services officer, Ms. Gibson, had reached her breaking point. She pulled Thomas out of class and summoned him and his mother to her office to break the bad news. For the next 30 days, Thomas was going to be locked up in juvenile hall. At the time, "getting locked up seemed like the worst thing that could happen to me," says Thomas, who went on to become a ten-time All-Pro Linebacker for the Kansas City Chiefs and one of the N.F.L.'s all time sack leaders. But getting involved in the juvenile justice system actually turned out to be "one of the most important breaks I ever got." Through the court, Thomas would meet several people who helped him turn his life around. His juvenile court experiences led him to set up his own foundation for troubled inner-city youths and inspired him to use his life to make a difference on behalf of other troubled youths.

Extractions: Game Notes: Sophomore tailback Greg Thomas rushed 28 times for 137 yards, including two big fourth-quarter runs of 38 and 31 yards, while the Wesleyan defense came up with two key interceptions, one returned 23 yards by Derrick Brantley for a clinching TD, to carry Wesleyan to a season-opening 16-7 win over Tufts. In a game expected to be a defensive struggle, Wesleyan and Tufts combined for just three points over the opening 53 minutes, that coming on a 38-yard field goal by Wesleyan freshman Vin Balsamo with 6:44 to go in the first quarter. The teams jockeyed back and forth over the next 45 minutes with each losing a fumble deep in opposing territory, Wesleyan turning it over at the Tufts 29 and Tufts coughing up the ball at the Wesleyan 30. Wesleyan scored the game's first TD when Thomas capped a 76-yard, 10-play drive with 6:50 to play on a one-yard run. During the march, Thomas had six rushes for 52 yards with 38 coming on a draw play. Tufts came right back, going 73 yards on eight plays, directed by QB Scott Treacy, who had just entered the game in place of starter Todd Scalia. Treacy completed each of his four passes during the drive with the final 10-yarder going to Matt Cerne, who grabbed a batted pass in the right corner of the endzone with 3:25 to play. Treacy also ran three times for 19 yards.
