Posted by: don on Tuesday, January 07, 2003 - 03:45 AM CET With the Vikings out of the post-season hunt (and we've had plenty of time to deal with that), nothing is sweeter than watching the Packers lose. This weekend was especially sweet as the Packers lost at home in the playoffs.

Extractions: Many Tri-State athletes have starred on pro playing fields The Tri-State has produced a long list of professional athletes dating back at least to the turn of the century when Evansville native and future bicycling hall-of-famer Frank Kramer filled stadiums as the 18-time national sprint bicycling champion. More recent Evansville pros - first baseman Don Mattingly of the New York Yankees and pitcher Andy Benes of the Seattle Mariners - faced one another earlier this month in the American League division series, won in five games by the Mariners. Before television saturated the American scene with sports, Edd Roush of Oakland City, Ind., starred for the Cincinnati Reds, becoming the National League batting champion in 1917 and 1919 and earning a spot in the Baseball Hall of Fame. And Gil Hodges, who called both Princeton, Ind., and Petersburg, Ind., home, retired in 1963 after a 17-year playing career, mostly with the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers. He also managed the 1969 World Series champion New York Mets. Bosse High School graduate Jim W allace pitched three seasons for the Boston Braves in the 1940s and the balance of his 15-year career in the minor leagues.
Extractions: Dennis Green and the Minnesota Vikings ended their 10-year relationship Friday without any clear idea of what comes next on the coaching front for either one of them. One source close to Green believes his most likely option is to sit out the NFL's 2002 season, waiting for next year when there are expected to be more head coaching vacancies than this offseason. Chief among them is the potential opening in Oakland, where Jon Gruden 's contract runs out after next season. Green, who has long entertained the idea of becoming the next NFL head coach to try his hand at TV, would likely pursue that goal this year if he does not land another coaching job. Green's closest associations in the world of network television are believed to be at CBS, although FOX carries NFC games and have handled most of Minnesota's in recent seasons. While Green is far from a natural before the camera, he is said to be interested in becoming a color commentator for one of the networks, rather than an in-studio talking head, as ex-coaches are more often utilized these days. Green's prospects to land another head coaching job this year aren't terribly promising. He would love an opportunity to be considered for the opening in San Diego, where he owns a home, but Chargers sources continue to say that Green will not be a factor in their coaching search.
Extractions: Jed Jacobsohn/Allsport If defense wins championships, what do coaches do? We were curious to see which of the four coaches whose teams are still alive in the NFL playoffs you would like to have leading your team into a big game. Of course, the reaction was mixed. Keep reading for a sample of the responses we received: It's a tough call between Jon Gruden and Brian Billick. However, I would have to say Billick would be my field general (that's really hard to say because I'm a die-hard Redskins fan). But I like the way Billick backs his players. He's not afraid to put the "word" out there about what he thinks about a team they're getting ready to play, i.e. Tennessee. I believe coaching is highly psychological and if you tell your team they're world-beaters and nobody can stop them look what can happen.

Extractions: You might not have heard of Rob Brzezinski before, and if the Vikings' new vice president of football operations has his way, you won't be hearing much more. "Rob Zombie," as he is known to some at Winter Park, is quiet, exceedingly measured and so committed to remaining in the background that two days of negotiations took place before he agreed to an interview Saturday. The Vikings' front-office shakeup last week exposed old wounds and opened a few new ones, threatening the delicate balance struck between the football and business ends of the organization. Brzezinski, a 32-year-old law school graduate whose own athletic career peaked with a stint on his college baseball team, is intent on subjugating his profile to allow coach Mike Tice and Director of College Scouting Scott Studwell represent the public face of the Vikings. "What's very clear in this business is that the people who are the most important are the players, the coaches and the talent evaluators," Brzezinski said in his first and last, he hopes public comments since owner Red McCombs elevated him to supervise the Vikings' personnel department, its contract negotiations and salary cap strategy.

We learned to stick with our team when things did not go our way. Football is like life itself; there are ups and downs in life and how well do we handle adversity? Do we quit? No, because that is the easiest thing to do. Do we give up on our team? No! The Vikings are our team win or lose! We stick with them.

But it paled in significance compared to the announcement that the Vikings were moving to an indoor stadium for the 1982 season. The old Met (Metropolitan Stadium) had been their home for all of their 21 years. It was at the Met that a young, inexperienced Vikings team became an NFL powerhouse, with the most feared home-field advantage in existence. But no longer would opponents cringe at the thought of playing the short-sleeved Vikings in subzero arctic conditions. "I'll miss that home-field advantage," Grant said wistfully. The Vikings christened the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome by qualifying for the playoffs. Burns had been with the Vikings through the Super Bowl years, starting in 1968 when Grant hired him. Burns invented the single-back style offense (to take advantage of Chuck Foreman's abilities), better known these days as the "West Coast Offense." Make no mistake, it was not Bill Walsh and the S.F. 49ers who invented it and used it so well in the 80's, it was Burns in the 70's that originated it and made it famous. He brought with him the respect he earned and deserved from the players. Since he played such a key role in helping the Vikings to four Super Bowls, they wanted to give him a fifth shot, this time as a winner. (April 25, 2002) Frank Gilliam, a top personnel man for most of his 31 years as an executive with the Minnesota Vikings , is retiring amid a reorganization of the team's front office. Rob Brzezinski will become vice president of football operations, the Vikings announced. The position was held by former head coach Dennis Green until his dismissal in January. Scott Studwell was promoted to director of college scouting. Gilliam, 68, will retire when his contract expires May 31, but will continue working with the team for the next two years as senior consultant for player personnel primarily as an evaluator of college talent. "This is a mutual agreement between the club and me," Gilliam said in a news release provided by the team. "The Vikings have offered me the opportunity to stay on as a consultant and I look forward to remaining active in that role." Gilliam joined the Vikings in 1971 and became vice president of player personnel in 1994. He gained a league-wide reputation as an astute talent evaluator and was instrumental in selecting several of the Vikings' key players over the past few years, including receiver Randy Moss and tackles Korey Stringer and Todd Steussie AP NEWS

Tom Donahoe, who helped rebuild the Steelers years back and, along with personnel director, Tom Modrak, they make the important draft day decisions. MIAMI DOLPHINS Dave Wannstedt and Senior VP Rick Spielman are both involved in the final decisions, but, when push comes to shove, Wannstedt, who learned his talent evaluation from former Dolphin coach Jimmy Johnson (who had full authority) gets the final approval of draft picks. NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS To take the job, Bill Belichick had to get the Tuna Policy complete control over every aspect of the draft and the rest of the personnel decisions. Coming off a Super Bowl win, his power is even more centralized. He creates his scouts in his own image and likeness taking on a Fourth Reich policy of my way or the highway. Personnel Director Scott Pioli gives advise to Belichick, but as a coach, Belichick may have as much stroke as any coach in the league. Extractions: KFAN.com Minneapolis , Minn. The silver lining in the black cloud that was the Minnesota Vikings 2001 season is that the team will have the seventh overall pick in the upcoming 2002 NFL Draft, their highest pick in 17 years. The Vikings' reward for its disappointing and sometimes controversial 5-11 finish last season is a chance to take an impact player, its first top-10 pick since taking Chris Doleman with the fourth overall selection in 1985. The entire Vikings organization - from the roster to the front office - was over-hauled since last season under the direction of new head coach Mike Tice and Vice President of Player Personnel Frank Gilliam. The bad news is Vikings probably have more holes to fill in the draft than any team outside of the expansion Houston Texans. The team lost 12 players via free agency, nine of whom were starters at some point during the season - including two on offense and six on defense. The good news is the team should find an immediate starter with the seventh pick. With three picks in the top 70 spots, the team would ultimately like to come out of draft with three potential starters. Outside of quarterback, tight end, center, running back and defensive end, every other starting positions is up for grabs or has questionable depth.
