You watch as the quarterback on the screen, facing Alabama, scrambles all the way to the sideline, pivots and throws a bullet across his body to a receiver at midfield. Next, he's zig-zagging his way past one, two, three, four Nebraska defenders en route to a 17-yard touchdown. Bobby Bowden has seen those plays and more. Speaking about his team's season opener at various functions this summer, the Florida State coach would tell his followers: "We're fixin' to face another one."

Extractions: The Guardian Howard Wilkinson must be doing something right. After seeing Sunderland so outplayed in the first half last night that they trailed by two goals, the manager watched his players conjure an extraordinary comeback to defeat Arsenal in this battle of reserve sides. Deservedly behind to strikes by Robert Pires and Francis Jeffers, Sunderland responded with three goals in 15 minutes when they had looked incapable of three by Christmas. Marcus Stewart, previously anonymous, set up the first for Kevin Kyle and then he and Darren Williams scored with headers to inflict Arsenal's fifth defeat in six matches. Both managers had shown their priorities lay elsewhere by selecting vastly understrength teams. Arsenal have made a habit of giving fringe, youth and recuperating players an opportunity in this competition but Howard Wilkinson's decision to follow suit indicated the seriousness of Sunderland's fight to avoid relegation. "I feel it would be wrong to take the risk of sending some of the players down to Arsenal," Wilkinson had explained before the start. Kevin Phillips, Michael Gray and others stayed behind as nine changes were made from the side that started at Charlton on Sunday.
Michael Hawkins - A Sixties Tasmanian Football Legend Back to Top. michael Hawkins A Tasmanian football Legend. To find out moreabout football in Tasmania today go to these websites. SFL ; NTFL ; ODFA. http://www.footballlegends.org/michael_hawkins.htm
Extractions: Michael Hawkins anticipation was always spot on. And his entry into League football was no exception, celebrating it in the best possible way - a premiership in his first year. He began his football career at Hobart High School from where he moved to Hobart Matriculation College, playing in their 1965 premiership side. Hawkins had one year with OHA in the amateurs before joining North Hobart as a 17 year-old. It was 1967 and an inexperienced North Hobart side, under the guidance of former Geelong strongman John Devine, won the premiership. Their more highly fancied Glenorchy opponents were run off their legs, as the youthful Robins took the flag. It was a remarkable feat - considering Devine was in his first year as coach and North had come from fourth position on the ladder; after taking the wooden spoon the year before. Hawkins started as a wingman/half forward and was an instant success. His ability to gain possession was second to none; he seemed to have the ball on a string. In fact, North Hobart made the grand final in Hawkins' first three years at the club. From 1967-69 they claimed two flags. It was Hawkins and his centreline team mates, Dickie Bennett, Trevor Best and Harry Dwyer, who set the team up for these memorable wins.
Michael Elliott - A Sixties Tasmanian Football Legend Back to Top. michael Elliott A Tasmanian football Legend. To find out moreabout football in Tasmania today go to these websites. SFL ; NTFL ; ODFA. http://www.footballlegends.org/michael_elliott.htm
Extractions: SIXTIES FOOTBALL LEGENDS MICHAEL "The Pope" ELLIOTT Sandy Bay's Michael Elliott was a renowned goalsneak; some say he was the most elusive TFL player they could remember. "Magical Mick" as he soon became known, was a superb reader of the play. He had the uncanny knack of being in the right place at the right time; usually right in front of goal. Elliott was a product of the Sandy Bay underage and graduated through the juniors, to make his senior debut in 1969. That year the Seagulls bowed out by just one point in the first semi final. In 1970 they edged closer, this time going out in the preliminary final. But the following year, 1971, told a different story. This finals series, gave Elliott his first premiership success and fondly remains as one of his greatest career highlights. Sandy Bay played in four finals that year, surviving two preliminary final appearances against New Norfolk after the first game was drawn. Then, as underdogs, they lead all day in the Grand Final to defeat raging hot favourites, Clarence, by 9 points. Elliott was a rare commodity. Virtually all his career, which spanned 13 seasons, was spent either at half forward or in a forward pocket. In these roles he soon became a match winner and regularly booted big bags of goals alongside his much taller team mates.
