Extractions: LAWRENCE Signing day couldn't come fast enough for Kansas. Five of the Jayhawks' football commitments jumped ship the past three weeks and switched to other schools. That left KU coach Mark Mangino scrambling late to find replacements for his second recruiting class. One who didn't get away was Wichita Southeast safety John Randle, a Wichita Eagle Top 11 pick. Schools were after him for his defense, but he also gained 1,757 rushing yards as a running back his senior season. "John isn't going to be locked into one position," Southeast coach Dan Johnson said. "He could make it as a wide receiver. He has great hands.

He is the only player in the history of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference to be names All-PSAC on both offense and defense. During his four year career at Kutztown, John started all 41 games, made 387 tackles, recovered eight fumbles, grabbed eight interceptions, registered 20 sacks and scored five touchdowns. The school retired his jersey (No. 9) in May of 1999 on "John Mobley Day," as declared by the Borough of Kutztown and the Pennsylvania State Senate. In the 1996 NFL Draft, the Broncos selected John with the 15th overall pick. During Mobley initial training camp, the rookie made a quick impression - posting 14 tackles and knocking Gino Torreta out of the game during a preseason match-up with the San Francisco 49ers. John was named first-team All-NFL by the Associated Press, The Sporting News, Pro Football Weekly and Football Digest in 1997.
