Extractions: Athletic, veteran quarterback with measurable NFL starting experience Slated to become the Packers' full-time backup to highly-durable starter Brett Favre in 1999, moving up from his No. 3 role of last season following the free agency departure of Doug Pederson to the Philadelphia Eagles Came to Green Bay as a free agent on the eve of the '98 regular season, spent much of his initial year in Titletown assimilating the team's 'West Coast' offense Not foreign to the fire, possesses 54 pro starts among 62 career games played with Seattle (1993-96) and Chicago (1997) "The first thing that jumps out at you about Rick," says new Packers quarterbacks coach Mike McCarthy, "is his athletic ability - he plays with really good body balance, he's always in rhythm, has really good feet and escapability. And he now has a very good understanding of the offense. Plus, he's an accurate ball thrower and he's experienced. If you get to your number two, now you've got a guy that has 50-some starts in the NFL." Was the second overall selection in the 1993 NFL draft after a standout career at the University of Notre Dame, leaving as the school's career touchdown pass leader and with the lowest career interception percentage in the history of the independent institution

Extractions: Being a Miami Dolphins fan mixed with being an avid supporter of starting quarterback, Jay Fiedler, often leaves my email overflowing on a Monday morning. Take this past week, for example, where the Dolphins had everything that could possibly go wrong... Well, go wrong. My friends and readers couldnt wait until the end of the season to let me know that Fiedler had no business starting in the NFL, they had to tell me quicker then the Dolphins exited Arrowhead Stadium. Over the years I have calmly discussed with other bar patrons why guys like Trent Dilfer, Jay Fiedler, and Jim Miller belong as starters in the NFL. I always get the same type of guys arguing with me as well. The old: He-wasnt-a-first-round-pick. argument is always my favorite. (For the record, Dilfer WAS a first round pick, but I digress.) Well, it got me thinking, what makes a quarterback starting material in this league?

While superstars like Jerry Rice and Tim Brown sat atop metal platforms and pseudo-stars like Sebastian Janikowski sat in designated stadium seats, Mirer was left with the rookies, free agents and scout-teamers, wandering around on the field with no place to go. He was stopped here and asked questions there. But overall, few paid any attention. His emotions were confused thrilled to finally be at the Super Bowl, flattened that he's had very little to do with the Raiders getting here.

Extractions: As published in print Aug. 14, 2000 Rick Mirer Rick Mirer is with his fifth NFL club, the 49ers, and the odds are greatly against him being able to resurrect his career. In more than 30 years of pro football coverage, Jim Plunkett is the only quarterback I can remember who was a top draft choice, fell into what seemed a career-ending tailspin and then came back to have a great career. I doubt any other quarterback could have taken the physical abuse Plunkett took in New England and the mental abuse in San Francisco and still gone on to the success he had, but Jim Plunkett is an amazing individual, with great mental toughness. Youngs reputation also suffered when he was with a bad team in Tampa Bay. After college, Young opted to play for the Los Angeles Express of the USFL instead of the NFL, and he was grabbed later by Tampa Bay in a dispersal draft. The Bucs had no real offensive scheme under Ray Perkins "I was just told to look for an open receiver," Young told me in disgust one time after hed joined the 49ers and Young often wound up running because he couldnt find an open receiver. That led most NFL general managers to think he couldnt be an NFL quarterback, but it didnt fool Bill Walsh, who traded second- and fourth-round picks for Young. Because he was such a good runner, Young had not taken the physical beating Plunkett did early in his Young career. Young came to San Francisco in good physical shape, and he and Walsh were confident he would be a top-flight NFL quarterback. The rest is history.
