Extractions: KIRKLAND, Wash. Ryan Leaf is hoping Mike Holmgren's coaching magic can help his stalled NFL career. Released by San Diego, Tampa Bay and Dallas in the past 15 months, Leaf was introduced Wednesday as the newest member of the Seattle Seahawks in perhaps his final chance to land a long-term NFL job. "This is a lot of attention for a third-string quarterback," a smiling Leaf told a jam-packed news conference at the Seahawks' headquarters. Leaf, the second player picked in the 1998 NFL draft after leading Washington State into its first Rose Bowl appearance in 67 years, signed a one-year contract Tuesday. The Cowboys released him Monday. Under Holmgren, Seattle's coach and general manager, Leaf will start out competing for the third-string job with two rookies: seventh-round draft pick Jeff Kelly and Ryan Van Dyke.

Extractions: SAN DIEGO Ryan Leaf caught on with the Seattle Seahawks just hours after an arenafootball2 team came calling. The San Diego Riptide of the af2, a minor league of the Arena Football League, faxed a contract offer to Leaf's agent Tuesday, a day after the controversial quarterback was cut by the Dallas Cowboys. "We think he'll take it as a joke," Riptide coach Cree Morris said. "If he accepts it, we'll bring him in for a workout. Why not?" But Seattle signed Leaf later Tuesday to compete for its third-string job. The Riptide offered the former San Diego Chargers quarterback a standard arenafootball2 contract: $200 a week, plus a $50 bonus per win. Leaf's agent, David Dunn, was on vacation in Europe and unavailable for comment, said his administrative assistant, Courtney Owens.

Extractions: The Heisman Race Well the Heisman votes are in, at least from our local panel of experts. There were six respondents to the Heisman question, though we can eliminate two right off. One voter listed Noah Brindise, and another listed Fred Weary. That is not allowed. The votes: Kevin: 1. Charles Woodson, 2. Ron Dayne, 3. Thad Busby Steve: 1. Ryan Leaf, 2. Ricky Williams, 3. Brock Huard So our consensus Heisman, thus far, is Charles Woodson, DB/WR, Michigan, with Ryan Leaf, QB, Washington State, running a close second. I think everyone made intelligent choices; a case could be made for any of them. Here is a statistical comparison of the most likely players at quarterback, running back, and wide receiver. Charles Woodson is a little more difficult to characterize statistically than the others; it is interesting that two of our experts picked him first; for the other two, he did not crack the top three.
