Extractions: Washington State 41, Washington 35 November 22 Husky Stadium Washington State used a strong passing attack led by Ryan Leaf and timely defensive presence to capture the Apple Cup for the first time since 1994. Washington used its longest drive of the season, a 14-play, 71-yard drive in 7:53, to jump on the scoreboard in the first quarter and take a 7-0 lead. After a Washington State punt, UW quarterback Brock Huard threw an interception that led to WSU's Michael Black's eight-yard TD run. Huard went on to throw four more interceptions that led to 17 Cougar points. The Huskies came out in the second half ready for a battle after the 17-7 halftime deficit. Down 24-7, the Dawgs scored twice as senior Fred Coleman caught a 38-yard TD pass from Huard and Tony Parrish picked off a Leaf pass, returning it 32 yards to bring the Huskies within three, 24-21. The Cougars struck back quickly as they marched 80 yards in 2:06, culminating in a 50-yard TD pass from Leaf to Chris Jackson. The Huskies did not give up, scoring 3:43 later on a 17-yard TD pass from Huard to Mike Reed to bring UW within three once again, 31-28. However, the Cougars controlled the fourth quarter, scoring twice to up the score to 41-28. The Cougars held the ball for 10:04 of the 15-minute quarter. Washington got on the board with nine seconds remaining when senior Jerome Pathon caught a 32-yard TD from Huard to bring the score to 41-35. The Huskies' ensuing onside kick was recovered by the Cougars, thus clinching the game for Washington State and its first Rose Bowl berth in 67 years.

Extractions: Seattle Times staff reporter E-mail this article Print this article Search web archive He is no longer the strong-armed, strong-willed franchise quarterback who drew favorable comparisons to Hall of Famer Dan Fouts when San Diego selected him in the 1998 NFL draft. Leaf is now a third-string reserve who has fallen to the Seahawks after agreeing to a one-year, $525,000 contract. He also has managed to convince another coach to believe that this time the former Washington State standout will reach his untapped potential. "I am under no illusions anymore," Seahawks Coach Mike Holmgren said. "There was a time that I thought I could coach anybody and everybody ... (but) that is not how it works. "I like our football team right now, and I think it is a healthy environment for a player to come into. I am going to be very involved, as I always am with the quarterback situation, but it is going to take a lot of effort on his part. It's a two-way street. I hope it works and I'm excited about the possibility of trying." Similar words were spoken by Dave Campo in Dallas, Tony Dungy in Tampa Bay and Kevin Gilbride, June Jones and Mike Riley in San Diego.

Ryan Leaf should trot on the field sometime in the first quarter tonight, participating in his first game since Dec. 13, 1998. Leaf missed the 1999 season with a torn labrum. It's taken two surgeries on his right shoulder and extensive rehabilitation to get to this point, an exhibition game against the 49ers at Candlestick Point. "It's going to be exciting for me," said Leaf, who'll relieve starter Jim Harbaugh after about two series. "Maybe, I'll be a little anxious, but that's just because I'm so excited to be out there."

Leaf's commitment was announced on ABC's broadcast Wednesday of the Rose Bowl, which Ryan Leaf watched from the Cougars' sideline.
Extractions: Comments from WSU Head Coach Mike Price: Pre-Illinois Football is coming off tremendous win over USC. September 15, 1997 SAVOR THE VICTORY: "I would like to take the time and savor a win against USC, but in this profession you don't get much time. It really was a history making performance by our football team. I am so happy for our seniors. They were able to beat UCLA and USC in the Coliseum and that is something no other group of seniors can say they have done at Washington State." PROGRAM SATISFACTION: "It is a special gratification to be the only WSU team to beat UCLA and USC in the same year and it is a thrill for our seniors and entire staff. It is a kind of exciting time right now in Cougar football." OFFENSE: "I still think the USC secondary is as good as there is. Those two corners played fantastic. I think we just executed and played very well also. I think our offensive line protected for Ryan (Leaf). I think Ryan is playing as well as he is capable of playing. He is making the right reads and he took care of the ball, although he had two picks. One was a great interception by Brian Kelly and the other was a tipped ball that should have been caught also by Brian Kelly. Michael Black, when he did get a chance to run the ball, ran well. He probably ended up having over 100 yards in total offense, factoring in his rushing and receiving totals." KEVIN McKENZIE: "Kevin made those two catches to win the game. The last one to win the game was very rewarding to him. He worked all summer and was in great shape. Then he did not play up to his capabilities against UCLA and he was very discouraged. A true winner does not stay discouraged very long and he worked very hard in the two weeks between games and really came though in the USC game."
