Extractions: Free Press Sports Writer Boos descended from the Seattle stands, and Ryan Leaf rose to meet them. He was about to make his first collegiate start for Washington State at main rival Washington as an unintimidated redshirt freshman. Striding to the center of the field, he cupped his hand over his ear, almost cooing, "I can't hear you!" That was 1995. Leaf's team lost, 33-30, but he completed 22 of 33 passes for 291 yards and a touchdown. More important, he began to establish the reputation he has today as a rookie with the San Diego Chargers. Leaf is the unflappable, cocky counterpart to Peyton Manning of the Indianapolis Colts, the square-but-determined choirboy out of Tennessee. They were the first picks picks in April's NFL draft Manning first, Leaf second and they will be two of the most heavily scrutinized rookies in years. Extractions: Ryan Leaf Retired By Brian Carnell Wednesday, August 7, 2002 During the week of downtime, one of the earth shattering events that occurred in the world was the retirement of San Diego/Tampa Bay/Dallas/Seattle "quarterback" Ryan Leaf retired. The really odd thing was that some of the stories claimed Leaf retired from football. Give me a break. Leaf might have been on the field occasionally, but whatever else he was doing, Leaf was not playing any recognizable form of football (if Leaf was playing football, then my cat is playing chess when it swipes at the pieces on the board). Leaf is a fascinating contrast to someone like Lance Armstrong. Leaf had a lot of physical gifts and apparently no desire or mental discipline to actually harness those gifts. Back in 1998 the San Diego Chargers gave up two first round and a second round pick as well as two very good players in order to draft Leaf. At the time the book on Leaf was that he might be even better than Peyton Manning (who went no. 1 in the 1998 draft Leaf went second). Instead in a horrible career, Leaf threw almost three interceptions for every touchdown, alienated teammates everywhere he went, and generally wasted the physical prowess that many of us armchair quarterbacks would kill for.

Steve Cox March 9, 2001 Ryan Leaf has given fans and critics three years of questionable behavior raising the question, "Does he deserve another chance?" Leaf has had run-ins with the media, fans, and teammates. He has reported to camp out of shape, shown little desire to get in shape, and has suffered injury in the process. Leaf has been caught in the act of playing flag football while being injured. He has also skipped team workouts in favor of recreation golf tournaments. Ryan cashed a check for ten million dollars and has given ten dollars worth of effort. Should a team take that chance? The Tampa Bay Buccaneers believe that Leaf is worth a shot. Tampa did not have to put out ten million to gain his services. A nominal, non-guaranteed contract is a small price to pay for a player high on ability. Sure he is lacking in desire, but the lack of talent at QB outweighs his lack of character. Given the state of the NFL today, where sex crimes, assault, and murder are commonplace, Mr. Leaf deserves at least one more chance. After all, he is really only guilty of being lazy, immature and irresponsible. Mere immaturity does not grant an all out NFL ban for any player. Several other players have been able to salvage their career after making bad decisions off the field.

Saving Project Ryan Chargers QB ryan leaf. We were talking here in the palatial Pro football Weekly officesnot that long ago, and one of my esteemed colleagues asked me a question http://archive.profootballweekly.com/content/archives/features_1999/neely_112299
Extractions: Ryan Leaf We were talking here in the palatial Pro Football Weekly offices not that long ago, and one of my esteemed colleagues asked me a question: If you were Chargers GM Bobby Beathard, what would you do with Ryan Leaf? There may be no greater dilemma in the NFL today than that one. Leaf, the second overall pick in the 1998 draft, has been a disappointment on the field, playing poorly as a rookie before being benched and then suffering a training-camp injury in July that has kept him on the sideline this season. But the bigger problem is that he seems to be a clueless jackass off the field. His indiscretions are too numerous to list here. Believe me. I tried. Leaf is currently serving a four-game suspension that resulted from an incident in which he reportedly yelled and cursed at Beathard and a coach. So the Chargers are essentially stuck with Leaf through the 2000 season. At that point, he can void the remaining three years on his contract. The Chargers would then have the option of paying a bonus to buy back two years at a higher price or letting Leaf become a restricted free agent. Before you try to beat Leaf into submission, Bobby, think of it this way: Leaf has gotten himself into jams in Pullman, Wash., and Big Fork, Mont. How long is he going to be able to stay out of trouble in Amsterdam?

Extractions: Thursday, Nov. 4, 1999 Shall we count the ways? Pro Football Weekly Leaf was suspended for four weeks because of his latest outburst. What did he do? He took that cheerleader fiancée of his and went on vacation, knowing that when his punishment is up at the end of November, the Chargers will be willing to give him another chance. Leaf gets paid millions, dates a cheerleader, lives in beautiful San Diego and can yell at whomever he wants without a worry of being fired. To me, the choice is simple. I want to be Ryan Leaf.
