Extractions: NFL Producer Most remember Jim Zorn for the nine seasons he played quarterback with the Seattle Seahawks. From 1978 to 1980, the left-handed QB passed for more than 3,000 yards each year and was the third player in NFL history to throw for more than 10,000 yards in his first four seasons. He played in 126 games with Seattle, where he became the club's all-time leading passer with 20,122 yards. He also holds franchise records for the longest pass completion (82 yards to David Sims in 1977) and the highest yards per-rushing attempt (4.87). After nine years in Seattle, Zorn spent 1985 as a backup in Green Bay. He then moved to the Canadian Football League's Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 1986 and his last year was with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1987. In 1989, Zorn embarked on his second career coaching where his first stop was Boise State University as an offensive assistant. He then had stints at Utah State and the University of Minnesota as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, respectively. Zorn returned to the Seahawks as an offensive assistant in 1997, and a year later he went to the Lions to be the quarterbacks coach. That year, he received accolades for the great success of rookie quarterback Charlie Batch. Zorn is one of six individuals to be inducted into the Seahawks' Ring of Honor, where he is joined Steve Largent, a former teammate and Hall of Fame wide receiver, who is now a U.S. Congressman.

Extractions: Ask The Hawkstorian! Mike Holmgren was genuinely shocked that fans would boo Matt Hasselbeck during his first home game as Seahawks quarterback, but no long-suffering Seattle fan could possible have been shocked. The boos weren't so much directed at Hasselbeck as they were at 26 years of quarterback frustration, accentuated by the last 14 of continually throwing high draft picks towards players who never make any long-lasting contributions. So, for the benefit of Coach Holmgren and others in the Seahawk organization who are devoid of any historical perspective, I now present the history of the Seahawk quarterback. You long-suffering fans know the story already, so you can skip this column if you chose not to relive the horror. In the beginning there was Jim Zorn. In truth, Jim Zorn wasn't projected to start in the first training camp of 1976. Neil Graff was an expansion choice from New England who started some games behind the injured Jim Plunkett. Steve Myer was a fourth-round draft pick and the first official "quarterback of the future." Graff started the first preseason game, but Zorn won fans and nearly the game with two second-half touchdown passes and a 3-yard run. Graff's disappointing play and Myer's raw talent forced the team to surrender a 4th round choice for 14-year veteran Bill Munson. Graff was released after two games and the depth chart was then Zorn-Munson-Myer.

Extractions: ... this Sunday, Buffalo's Drew Bledsoe - who threw for 29,657 yards in nine previous seasons with New England will face his former team for the first time? As noted in the Buffalo News, this will be the ninth time in NFL history that a quarterback has faced a franchise for which he threw for 25,000 yards. On all eight previous occasions, the QB's new team won: ... Atlanta's double-threat quarterback Michael Vick rushed for 91 more yards in the Falcons' defeat of New Orleans on Sunday? Vick's rushing penchant, though, has been cause for concern the past two weeks. Feeling "dead tired," he missed the final two offensive plays of Sunday's game, having removed himself because of exhaustion. For that same reason, he sidelined himself during Atlanta's 30-0 victory over Carolina in Week Seven. Even if he solves the fatigue issue, Vick's style increases the likelihood of injury. Saints safety Sammy Knight told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, ""I really believe Michael Vick will have a hard time finishing the season," Knight said. "He's the kind of guy who takes head-on hits. He's running so fast, he's going to take some serious pops."
