Extractions: MOUNTAIN VIEW Joe Kapp no longer blames Cal, the center of his universe, for firing him as its football coach. "I coached at one place," he said of his 20-34-1 record at Cal from 1982 to 1986. "Then they kicked me out. I didn't win enough games." Kapp doesn't even hold it against Cal for denying him something as life-sustaining as football. "I haven't had a drink of tequila since 1981," he said. "I swore off tequila until Cal went back to the Rose Bowl." Cal hasn't played in a Rose Bowl game since the 1958 season, when Kapp was its All-America quarterback. But Kapp's not throwing down tequila shots shatters his macho image as football's "toughest Chicano."

Extractions: IT'S EASY, even inviting at times, to look at the annual Cal vs. Stanford football game and snicker at its self-important nickname: The Big Game. Right. How big was it all those years it featured two teams skidding into off-season oblivion with losing records? But if the Big Game isn't the biggest game in the Bay Area, just what is? What other local rivalry compares? What other game boasts the history, the flavor and the passion that this 110-year-old cross-Bay duel offers? The Giants and Dodgers began playing in baseball against one another back in 1890, but for 67 years those games were staged in New York. By the time their West Coast rivalry began in 1958, the Big Game already spanned 12 U.S. presidential administrations.

Extractions: NFL Insider He played quarterback in a Rose Bowl, the Canadian Football League's Grey Cup, and a Super Bowl. In fact, he is the only man on the planet who has quarterbacked in all three games. His name is Joe Kapp, and after only four NFL seasons-at the age of 32 and just one year removed from leading the Minnesota Vikings into Super Bowl IV-his pro career was over. Joe Kapp. (NFLP) No, not because of injury. Rather, because of a courtroom decision by a jury of his peers. In 1970, the term "unrestricted free agent" hadn't been born. Curt Flood was about to turn major league baseball on its head with legal action on that front, but Kapp had sued his league and lost. So, after one last season with the Boston Patriots, he walked away from the game. No second thoughts. No looking back. "After college, I was drafted by Washington in the eighteenth round [in 1959], but no one from there even called me," Kapp, 62, points out. "That's why I went to Canada for eight years." For many men, that would have been the end of the story, but not Joe Kapp.

Extractions: Ford by Brian Caulfield F or countless Cal alums, there are no college memories more vivid or more thrilling than those of the annual football competition between Berkeley and Stanford. This fall marks the 100th anniversary of the Big Game. More than just a sporting match, the Big Game embodies the decades-old rivalry that exists between the top public and private universities in Northern California. For many, the Big Game brings back memories of blazing bonfires held the Friday night before the match and yelling "Freshmen more wood!" There is the week of wearing blue and gold. And who can forget (or in some cases, remember) the wild tailgate parties. And how many recall watching Oski effortlessly wandering up and down the steps of Memorial Stadium? Or the Card Stunts, where students in the rooting sections used colored cards to spell out "Cal" and other spirited messages. But for those who were actually on the playing field, Big Game memories hold a special place in their hearts and minds. In this report, four football heroes from Big Games past recall personal moments of glory. T Joe Kapp, whose brother, Larry, owns the bar and grill, is the unofficial curator of the Cal-Stanford shrine. Joe Kapp led Cal to Big Game victories in 1956 and '58 as quarterback, and went on to play professional football, taking the Minnesota Vikings to the Super Bowl in 1970 before returning to Cal as head football coach in 1982.
