Extractions: Savannah Morning News ATLANTA A season full of Y2K glitches were forgotten, if for only a day, in Atlanta's 37-14 win over the Arizona Cardinals. The trademarks of last year's success running the ball, winning the battle of turnovers and making big plays on defense finally made an encore at the Georgia Dome Sunday, leaving the defending NFC Champions wondering aloud: Where has this effort been all year? "Unfortunately, this is one of the few weeks that remind you of last year," said quarterback Chris Chandler after the team won its fourth game in 15 tries this season. "Why didn't we play like this all year?" asked 13-year veteran linebacker Jessie Tuggle. "This is what we've been capable of doing. It makes you wonder." Byron Hanspard, who was making his first start since Oct. 3, gave the team it's first 100-yard rushing performance of the year. The defense stole two Jake Plummer passes while the Atlanta offense didn't have a single turnover. And after giving up two touchdown drives in the first half, the defense held to Cardinals to no points and just 123 total yards in the second half to officially eliminate the 6-9 team from the NFC playoff picture. "The season wasn't as fun as it could have been, but at least we know we finally played like we're capable," said offensive guard Calvin Collins. "We were a different team today for some reason. It's not like we weren't trying the other 15 weeks, but for some reason it all came together today."
Extractions: Morris News Service SUWANEE Byron Hanspard wouldn't turn down a big contract or a Pro Bowl berth. What the Atlanta Falcons running back wants most, though, is a platform to preach from. Outspoken about his faith since his days as one of college football's premier runners at Texas Tech, Hanspard intersperses almost every comment about football with a religious reference. He is a licensed Pentecostal minister and a kindred spirit of Green Bay Packers defensive end and ordained minister Reggie White, although the two have never met. Hanspard's convictions are no less unwavering than those of White, who set off a firestorm earlier this year with a speech to the Wisconsin Assembly. Among other things, White called homosexuality a sin and said that the plight of gays and lesbians shouldn't be compared to the struggles faced by African Americans. "There wasn't anything wrong with what he said," Hanspard asserted this week. "If people don't know Jesus, they're going to think what he said is wrong. All he's doing is telling the truth. . . . I'll be the same way, regardless." If his rookie season is any indication, Hanspard will get his podium time soon enough. The 41st pick of the '97 draft had a flashy if somewhat inconsistent season in which he recorded three of the 12 longest runs from scrimmage and two of the eight longest kickoff returns in franchise history.

Texas Tech Defense Sees Shaw As Biggest Iowa Threat There are no perfect football teams, Patterson said. We're not perfect on offense, that's for sure. The best way to control byron hanspard and company is http://archive.sportserver.com/newsroom/ap/fbo/1996/col/b12/feat/archive/122796/

The Red Raiders face a similar problem Sunday in Sedrick Shaw. Shaw has rushed for 4,043 yards in his college career and 1,003 yards this season, making the senior running back only the eighth player in Big Ten history to rush for more than 1,000 yards in each of three seasons. Texas Tech defensive coordinator John Goodner knew Shaw was special, but that nugget of Big Ten history surprised him when he learned of it during the kickoff luncheon Friday. "We knew he was a great football player coming in, but I think that really puts a challenge to our football team to be able to slow him down," Goodner said. Shaw, whose style his coaches say is "hard to define," said he doesn't know what moves he'll make on the field until they happen. "It's like playing on the playground sandlot football," he said.

Extractions: So, you wanna bet on football? You say you can predict the outcomes with certainty, and you want to turn your hard-earned cash into more cash? Well, then, consider the case of the Southern Methodist Univeristy football team, which has been a study in unpredictability and a prognosticator's nightmare this season. SMU opened the season by hosting the University of Arkansas, who has hovered around the top 25 for most of the season. The Mustangs proceeded to lose quarterback Ramon Flanigan for the year with a separated hip, but still managed to defeat the Razorbacks. How did SMU follow up such a potentially-galvanizing victory? They promptly lost the next four games including one-sided margins against the U.S. Naval Academy, the University of Wisconsin and the University of Texas and appeared to be sinking back into the oblivion that has characterized the program since its return from the NCAA death penalty in 1989. True to form, though, SMU followed their brush with glory by sinking again. They dropped a 38-15 decision to the University of Houston who hadn't won a game since they beat SMU last season last Saturday.
