Extractions: Avalanche-Journal There are 11 days to go before Byron Hanspard learns whether the national media designates him as college football's best player. He was named the next best thing Monday - the nation's best player at his position. The junior I-back became the second Texas Tech recipient in the seven-year history of the Doak Walker National Running Back Award, edging out national rushing leader Troy Davis from Iowa State and Darnell Autry from Northwestern. "All I can say is, to God be the glory,'' Hanspard said. "Like I've said before, what's for Byron Hanspard, Byron Hanspard will receive, no matter what people say or what people do.'' Hanspard also received another first-team all-America honor Monday from the the Football Writers Association of America. He has been included on all three major all-America squads released so far. The Walker Award presentation banquet is scheduled for 7 p.m. today at the Fairmont Hotel in Dallas at which outgoing Notre Dame coach Lou Holtz will be the featured speaker. "I'm proud of Byron and all he brings to the table for Texas Tech,'' Red Raider head coach Spike Dykes said. "You have players like him that project a university (image) throughout the country, and it makes a big difference. He's been a great ambassador for us for a long time.''
Extractions: Hanspard is the sixth running back in NCAA history to rush for over 2,000 yards in a single season. He is the all-time career and single season rushing leader at Texas Tech, rushing for over 100 yards in 16 straight games and for more than 200 yards in 5 games in 1996 alone. Hanspard is also an ordained Pentecostal minister who is actively involved in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and routinely speaks to church groups and to school kids about the importance of education, faith and avoiding drugs. "I'm pleased that Spike Dykes was able to produce another winner," said Mr. Doak Walker, former Heisman Trophy winner and namesake of the award. "Byron is a fine athlete who I know will live up to our expectations, and we are proud to include him among our recipients." Hanspard will accept the award at the 1996 Dr Pepper Doak Walker Award Presentation Banquet in the Regency Ballroom of the Fairmont Hotel tomorrow evening, December 3. Keynote speaker for the event will be Lou Holtz, retiring head coach of the University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Hanspard will also be recognized at the 1996 Home Depot College Football Awards Show broadcast on ESPN on Thursday, December 12, 1996.

Extractions: Rick Dykes, 40, was a major factor in Texas Tech Universitys offensive production during the last decade and is expected to foster a wide-open approach to the offensive attack in his first year as Arizonas offensive coordinator. He returns to coaching after a year working in private business. His experience at Texas Tech spanned 10 years, and he spent his final four years from 1996-1999 as offensive coordinator. His work with UAs offense during spring practice showed that UAs 2001 unit will be one that puts a high priority on an effective passing game that saturates the field and will complement that emphasis using all the capabilities of some quality running backs a balanced yet unpredictable approach is the objective. As to balance, in one of Dykes most prolific years coordinating the Red Raiders offense, Texas Tech averaged 202 yards rushing and 203 yards passing per game in 1998. Thats the kind of production UAs John Mackovic will have in mind as he and Dykes plan game strategy. Dykes has a solid background working with both quarterbacks and runners.
