(Jan 1, 1997 - 22:18 EST) Joe Germaine's long journey from No. 3 quarterback to bloodied second-half Rose Bowl starter ended in victory Wednesday when No. 4 Ohio State beat No. 2 Arizona State 20-17. Germaine wasn't born in 1974 when the Buckeyes' last celebrated in Pasadena. They would lose four straight Rose Bowls over the next 22 years before the youthful-looking Germaine directed the winning drive with 19 seconds remaining. The Buckeyes can thank Arizona State for having Germaine at all. He grew up 10 minutes from ASU's Tempe campus in Mesa, where he was a standout defensive back and quarterback in high school. The Sun Devils recruited him for his defense, but Germaine dreamed of playing quarterback for a major college team. "I was recruited, but things just didn't work out there. I have no regrets. I'm happy to be at Ohio State," said Germaine, whose family had season tickets for ASU football. "It's kind of ironic how things worked out. We met up against each other in the Rose Bowl. It's a good feeling to win no matter who you play."

Extractions: Riverside Press-Enterprise PASADENA, Calif. (Jan 2, 1997 - 05:36 EST) Jake Plummer, the perfect college football player, made one mistake Wednesday evening. He left too much time on the Rose Bowl clock for an Arizona kid named Joe Germaine to make like Jake the Snake himself, sending Arizona State home to Tempe in an imperfect 11-1 state, its national championship scheme razed. "It is kind of ironic," Germaine said in the afterglow of Ohio State's 20-17 triumph. Joe grew up in an ASU family, 10 minutes from Tempe in Mesa. He wanted badly to fulfill his dreams of throwing TD spirals for the Sun Devils. But when ASU coach Bruce Snyder decided Germaine would better fit in the program as a defensive back, Ohio State's John Cooper moved right in. You can't really blame Snyder for sizing up Germaine as a potential DB. When you have a quarterback as gifted as Jake Plummer in your program, nobody else will look especially good in comparison. Plummer is about to embark on a long and lucrative NFL career for some lucky franchise smart enough to look past his slender Joe Montana frame and focus on that Joe Montana game.

Extractions: You can read carefully through Joe Germaine's bio on NFL.com and find no mention of Scottsdale (Ariz.) Community College. There's plenty of information detailing Germaine's days as a star at Ohio State, about his Big 10 offensive player of the year honors, his eight school records. But no mention of his brief stay at the Arizona juco or his coach there, Land Jacobsen. Still, Jacobsen can say with confidence that he helped Germaine reach the NFL, even if it isn't often recognized publicly. The proof of Jacobsen's influence hangs on his office wall a signed photo of Germaine in a St. Louis Rams jersey. Germaine, now in training camp with the Kansas City Chiefs, wrote, "Coach Jacobsen, a man of his word. Thanks for getting me where I am today."

Extractions: BLOOMINGTON, Indiana (Ticker) David Boston sparked Ohio State by scoring on a punt return and sealed the win with his second touchdown catch from Joe Germaine as the top-ranked Buckeyes posted another rout, 38-7 over Big Ten Conference foe Indiana. Boston snapped a scoreless tie 6:27 into the game when he raced 70 yards with a punt. Ohio State built the lead to 21-7 at halftime and Boston opened the third quarter with a three-yard TD grab from Germaine, who completed 31-of-45 passes for a career-high 351 yards and three touchdowns. Capping the scoring with 6:26 to play, Germaine hit Boston with a two-yard touchdown toss as the Buckeyes (8-0, 4-0 Big Ten) remained one of seven unbeaten teams in the nation. Germaine helped his slim Heisman Trophy hopes with a fourth straight 300-yard passing effort, hitting Boston nine times for 110 yards and hooking up with Dee Miller 11 times for 159 yards. Ohio State, which learned earlier this week it is second behind UCLA in the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) rankings, has won its eight games by an average of more than 29 points and has held five opponents to 10 points or less. Freshman Antwaan Randle El was 16-of-31 for 218 yards with one touchdown and an interception for Indiana (3-5, 1-4), which has lost the last eight meetings with the Buckeyes.
