Extractions: ALAMEDA You know of Jerry Rice, Tim Brown, Charlie Garner, the starry crew behind record-setting Raiders quarterback Rich Gannon. But there is another crew that started Gannon's meandering journey from thrice-unwanted NFL castoff to his coronation Wednesday as the league's Most Valuable Player. Gus Ignas and the teenage Gannon would plod through the dark, bone-chilling, late-winter mornings of Philadelphia in the early 1980s, down to the Schuylkill River that dissects the city's west end. The late Ignas was Gannon's high school crew coach at St. Joseph's Prep. He also started a trend that continues through today, the Raiders' last practice day of the playoff bye week they have earned as the AFC's top seed.

Extractions: DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER SAN DIEGO - Long before he started throwing passes to Jerry Rice, Rich Gannon threw to Terry Bradway. Yes, that Terry Bradway, the Jets' general manager. This was 20 years ago, when Bradway was a scout for the USFL's Philadelphia Stars and Gannon, a former Philadelphia high-school standout, was a freshman quarterback at Delaware. Gannon often showed up at the Vet - he knew the Stars' ticket manager - always looking for a partner, somebody willing to run pass patterns and catch his passes. Bradway was that guy. "I was just having fun catching balls," Bradway recalled this week. "I thought I was back in my youth." They forged a friendship that, more than a decade later, helped jump-start Gannon's dormant pro career. Now here he is, quarterback of the AFC champion Raiders, the NFL's MVP, aiming to win a Super Bowl and become the Jim Plunkett of his era. "It's a great story," Bradway said. "When you're in this business, there are certain guys you're really happy for. He's one of those guys. He never gave up." Gannon has been to the NFL scrap heap and back. He was drafted by the Patriots in 1987, but he refused to play defensive back and was traded to the Vikings. In Minnesota, he played with quarterback Brad Johnson, who will start for the Bucs Sunday in Super Bowl XXXVII. Small world.

Extractions: Meet the Buccaneers This is Rich's 15th season in the NFL, his fourth with the Raiders. Rich played his first six years with the Vikings, then one season with the Redskins and four with the Chiefs before signing with Oakland. Rich was always a backup quarterback until he got to the Raiders, where he has blossomed into one of the best starting QBs in the league! After being named the MVP of the Pro Bowl each of the last two years, Rich topped that this year by being named NFL Most Valuable Player for the 2002 season! He led the high-powered Raiders attack, leading the NFL in passing yards with 4,689, while throwing 26 TD passes. Fun fact: Rich was a record-setting quarterback in college at the University of Delaware - and he was also the team's punter! Super Bowl Home

Extractions: Mike Vanderjagt: Most kickers realize their role is to kick the ball and shut up. But not this feisty Colt! Mikey bashed both his quarterback and his head coach when he questioned their lack of emotion and passion. The sore kicker moaned, "I'm not a real big Colts fan right now ". Well, he should be a big fan - they are paying him quite a juicy salary to just kick a few balls around. We are guessing not many Colts are big Vanderjagt fans after hearing his disloyal comments!
