Extractions: N.C. Natives Christy and John Mack Give $10 Million to Duke From the Duke News Service Feb. 25, 1999 Christy King Mack, a Greensboro native, and John J. Mack, a Mooresville native, are contributing $10 million to The Campaign for Duke, university President Nannerl O. Keohane announced Thursday. The five-year Campaign for Duke, announced Oct. 3, seeks to raise $1.5 billion and to date has surpassed $800 million. "Christy and John Mack are energetic, public spirited and intellectually alive people who have achieved great success in life but have never forgotten their North Carolina roots," Keohane said. "They are committed to Duke and are helping us build new strengths while undergirding the endowment for our generous and costly financial aid program. Duke is indeed fortunate to have friends who know its many dimensions and who are eager to help us in so many ways." Keohane said that the gift is double the amount the Macks first outlined to her. "Those who know them aren't surprised, however. It is characteristic of John and Christy to help Duke as much as they can."

But the members of this elite group share more than just an NFL connection. They were all players in the summer high school classic, now known as the Silicon Valley Youth Classic Charlie Wedemeyer All-Star Football Game. The game, billed as the "Best Game in Town" by its sponsor, the Almaden Valley Rotary Club, will return for its 26th year when a new group of all-stars take the field on July 26, 7:30 p.m., at San Jose State University's Spartan Stadium. The classic began in the summer of 1974 and, with the exception of 1976, the game has been played every summer since. "The Best Game in Town" has featured over a dozen players (among them, Cosbie of St. Francis, Don Schwartz of Mitty, Toews of Del Mar, Campbell of Santa Teresa, Monroe of Overfelt, Greg Woodard of Silver Creek, John Tuggle of Independence, Ben Bennett of Peterson, John Faylor of Mitty, Garcia of Gilroy, Howard of Bellarmine, Kirk of Bellarmine, Ryan of Oak Grove and Tillman of Leland) who have gone on to the NFL, and a couple more (Ken Caminiti of Leigh and Bill Haselman of Saratoga) who have gone on to play major league baseball.

Nixon was just days away from resigning as the 37th President of the United States, and Jack Nicholson's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest was setting box office records across the country. The Boston Celtics had just won another NBA crown, and the Oakland A's were on the verge of winning their third straight World Series. It was the summer of 1974, and Doug Cosbie and Don Schwartz were two of the 60 or so players about to play in a brand new football game... something called the Santa Clara County All Star Bowl. Cosbie and Schwartz would both go on to star in the National Football League, Cosbie for the Dallas Cowboys and Schwartz for the St. Louis Cardinals and New Orleans Saints. And that football game they both played in would go on to become a summer tradition in the Santa Clara Valley. This summer that All Star Bowl, now known as the Charlie Wedemeyer All-Star Football Game, returns for its 25th year and has grown from its humble beginnings into a summer classic. And it all started because members of the Almaden Valley Rotary Club had an idea.
