Extractions: By Dave Stringer Dolphins acquire Williams, axe Gardener who joins the Redskins August 1, 2002 Fed up with Daryl Gardener's continued absences from minicamps and with an opportunity to acquire Jay Williams from the Carolina Panthers, the Miami Dolphins pulled the trigger in both instances, ending Gardener's playing days with the Dolphins. A player who paired with Tim Bowens to give the Dolphins perhaps the best defensive tackle combination when both were healthy, Gardener pushed the buttons of Dolphins management the wrong way, a strange move for a player with a large contract who missed eight games in 2001 because of a bad back. Further, in the offseason the team had shown concern for Gardener's career, offering to move him to defensive end to help reduce the chances of him reinjuring his back. Apparently Gardener didn't feel that attending spring minicamps to help him learn a new position and allowing the team an opportunity to check out his back was in his best interests. The Dolphins interest in Williams doesn't not come as a surprise. When the Carolina Panthers asked Williams to take a pay cut to acknowledge his new role as a backup to Julius Peppers, picked 2nd overall in the 2002 draft, Williams balked and during the subsequent renegotiations the Dolphins made it known that should Williams be released, they were definitely interested. When Williams and Panthers management mended fences and it became clear he would not be released, Miami moved to acquire ex-Raven Rob Burnett. In fact, had Williams been cut by Carolina and accepted an offer from the Dolphins, there is a decent chance the Dolphins would have cut Gardener earlier than they did.

Nightlife Store Don't Miss It! NFL Season Predictions By Jeremy Justin Burnett 1) The Dallas Cowboys starting quarterback Quincy Carter will play poorly in the West Coast offense which requires a quarterback to make accurate short throws. The West Coast offense is all about timing and quick decisions. Carters strengths are quick feet and an above average deep ball. Carter does not throw the tight spiral pass needed in the West Coast offense. Also, his lack of awareness in the pocket often leads to bad decision making. Carters play will ultimately determine how good the Cowboys will be this season. 2) The Arizona Cardinals will end next season with a record of 6 wins 10 losses. The Cardinals play in the toughest division in football, the new NFC West. I predict the Cardinals record within the division to be 1 win - 5 losses with a best case scenario of 2 wins- 4 losses.

Does being in a room for ten hours surrounded by 25 children, ages three to nine-years-old, sound like fun? Packer defensive tackle Santana Dotson loved it. Last season, Dotson appeared in one of the National Football League's United Way television commercials, towering over his co-stars. "I admit that I did look forward to the lunch break, but we had a good time," he said. "I wish people could have seen the outtakes. They were fun. We were playing games and horsing around."

"I think that's fair," said Holmgren, whose opinion is shared by numerous scouts and assistant coaches for teams that played the Packers. "Gilbert (Brown), when he's played, he's awfully good. Gabe (Wilkins) has battled in there. But consistency, I don't think it's close." Two years ago, some personnel men thought Wolf had lost his marbles after he paid Dotson $6 million over three years to leave Tampa Bay as an unrestricted free agent. Dotson replaced John Jurkovic as the other member of a defensive line that included Reggie White, Sean Jones and Brown. Today, with White unable to go hard for an entire game, Jones retired and the oft-injured Brown able to play only 40% of the regular-season snaps, Dotson has become what defensive coordinator Fritz Shurmur refers to as "the cornerstone" of the line.

Extractions: Day one of free agency saw the Redskins first complete a trade with the St. louis Rams for RB Trung Canidate. Canidate has star potential but had fallen into coach Mike Martz' bad books, so the Rams graciously gave him to the Redskins for David Loverne who would have inevitably been cut and their 4th round draft pick. On Sunday, the Redskins reportedly gave Canidate a new 4 year contract worth $6.5 million with a $1.5 million signing bonus. The Skins also filled their most glaring need and most recently ignored need on the first day of free agency. One of the best available free agents on the market and undoubtedly the best guard available, Randy Thomas, signed a 7 year $28 million contract. Young, talented, and a leader in the dressing room, he will be a force beside tackle Jon Jansen for years to come. Thomas received a $7 million signing bonus. But why stop at one guard, when you need two? Dave Fiore signed a 4 year $6.5 million contract with a $1.5 million signing bonus. While not quite the level of Thomas, he provides the Redskins with a potentially menacing offensive line dare we say it... worthy of the name Hogs. Is this the birth of the Hogs III? They may not conjure up the powerful, bruising imagery of past Hogs units but they certainly have the potential to be devastating.
