Extractions: Walter Payton: 1954-1999 A man who has friends can never die, because he will live on in their hearts. He will live on in their soul. He will be passed on to other's through their love and words, so that his existence will bridge the gap between life and death. In doing so, he lives forever. David Levian The following is a tribute in words and pictures to a man who touched so many lives, not only with his talents on a football field, but his generousity with his life. Click on the picture to go to Walter's homepage and learn more about The Walter Payton Foundation and how to send letters of condolences to his family. The following is taken from Carol Slezak of the Chicago Sun-Times. Twenty-four hours after his death, they gathered to celebrate Walter Payton's life. Their feelings raw, their eyes bleary, their hearts sad, they jammed a little banquet room. And while it wasn't a party, it wasn't a wake, either. No, it was about a man so special, with a heart so big, that even in death, he can evoke smiles, laughter and awe. About 100 of Payton's fans convened at Carlucci's restaurant in Rosemont for the broadcast of "The Walter Payton Show" on WSCR-AM (1160). For two years, before he got sick, Payton talked Bears football weekly with hosts Mike North and Dan Jiggetts. On Tuesday, Payton's former teammate Doug Buffone joined North and Jiggetts. Despite their red-rimmed eyes, the trio was determined to be upbeat.

Extractions: NFL.com (Oct. 11, 2001) While capturing the king is the objective of any chess game, the prized possession on your opponent's side is the queen. The queen is a gem that can go in any direction on the board and is more powerful than any other piece. Every NFL team has such a piece: Some are quarterbacks, some are running backs. Brian Urlacher video Real: For the Chicago Bears , their gem is nestled in the middle of their defense. Brian Urlacher , the second-year man out of New Mexico, has not only filled the position of "dominating defender" that is a must-have on any team, but he has also helped turn the Bears from a bunch of pawns into potential kings of the NFC. Urlacher, named the Defensive Player of the Week for Week 4 , registered a sack, a forced fumble, an interception, and a defensive score for the Bears against the Atlanta Falcons , clearly making the game Urlacher's best as a pro. It's the kind of play reserved for players on exceptional teams something the 2001 Bears weren't expected to be.

Columnists Finder: Thrower's deeds worth memorial Thursday, August 29, 2002 A name on a street. A name on a bridge. A name on a park. That's all they ask. Anything to render everlasting a memory that lapsed for too long. Six months have passed since Willie Thrower died in his hometown of New Kensington. That's a mere exhale in time compared to a half-century of neglect. See, this fellow from New Ken High School was the first black quarterback to play in the NFL, Chicago Bears, Oct. 18, 1953. It took a generation before the league gave another black quarterback a fair chance to play, the Steelers' Joe Gilliam in 1974. It took decades before the rightful attention was focused on the man known as Willie The Pro, and still some residents of his own hometown weren't convinced of his distinction by the time he died in February at 71. So now there's a movement to remember Thrower and recognize him in perpetuity. Community leaders formed a committee to study the possibilities. The amazing thing isn't so much that his name likely will be emblazoned on street signs along the Industrial Boulevard that follows the Allegheny River, or on a plaque astride the new Locust Street bridge in the center of town, or on the markers identifying Memorial Park off Stevenson Boulevard.

Extractions: Dick Butkus, selected all-NFL seven times in his nine seasons, will be profiled on Wednesday, April 16 at 8 p.m. and midnight ET. It is possible that Dick Butkus was the meanest, nastiest, fiercest linebacker to ever put on a helmet. More than a quarter of century after his retirement there remains the Butkus image, one of the middle linebacker wrapping up a running back and viciously slamming him to the ground like an unwanted toy. There is the famous photograph of No. 51 with his lips curled in contempt taken during a game in 1968. Eight-time Bears Pro Bowl performer Dick Butkus (#51) terrorized NFL offenses. After being a two-time All-American at Illinois, where he played center as well as linebacker, Butkus terrorized NFL offenses as the hub of the Chicago Bears' defense. The man who lived for contact was all-NFL seven times and played in the Pro Bowl eight times in a career cut short to nine years by knee injuries. In 1970, a panel of NFL coaches voted Butkus the player they would start with if they were building a new team from scratch.

Extractions: by Geoff Hassard - Sports Information Director The football team opened their season on Saturday the 7th with a convincing 20-0 win over Westfield State in the rain. WPI took control from the beginning, scoring on their first two possesions of the game. The first score was a pass connection from junior quarterback Nate Cote (N. Attleboro, MA) to junior wide receiver Josh Hines (Mansfield, MA) that covered 36 yards. Greg Amiro (Chelmsford, MA) added the extra point for the 7-0 lead. After a Westfield punt, WPI took over at their own 30-yard line and proceeded to drive 70 yards for another score, capped by a 1-yard plunge by junior tailback Mike Godfrey (Holliston, MA). Amiro made the PAT and the score was 14-0 as the first quarter ended. The score remained 14-0 late in the third quarter when Westfield was driving towards a score. Then the defense came up big when senior captain Brian Learned (Clinton, MA) intercepted a pass at the 10 yard line and returned it 33 yards out to the WPI 43. On the ensuing drive that began the fourth quarter, Cote finished off the 57-yard drive with a 10-yard run for the final score that put the game out of reach for the Owls. Godfrey and Learned received honors for their performances against Westfield. Godfrey, who rushed for a career high 162 yards, was selected as the offensive player of the week in the Freedom Football Conference and co-offensive player of the week in New England by the ECAC. Learned, who had 14 tackles and an interception was named to both the FFC and ECAC honor rolls.
