Extractions: This is the story of an urban university's up-and-down struggle to find its niche in the world of big-time college football. Although its bowl trips and national rankings have been few and far between, the University of Louisville has a football history that's incredibly rife with larger-than-life heroes. Although many football fans may not realize it, the immortal Johnny Unitas, who became known as "Mr. Quarterback" in the National Football League, is a U of L product. So are other famous pro stars such as Lenny Lyles, Doug Buffone, Tom Jackson, Otis Wilson, Joe Jacoby, Mark Clayton, Ted Washington, Frank Minnifield, and Ray Buchanan. They are all in this book. Extractions: As the only remaining local 24-hour sports talk radio station, The Score always has callers. Wake up in the middle of the night with some major revelation about the future of the glass QB, Shane Matthews? This is who you can call up and let it out. And it's 100 percent sports, probably the only place in town where hardcore, detailed discussion is likely to go down. Want to get a round-robin going about what's really wrong with Kerry Wood's pitching arm, why Don Baylor keeps playing a catcher who can't catch (that's Todd Hundley) or why Chip Caray always sounding like a complete jerk? This is the place for you. Inhabiting The Score from noon to 4pm, Monday through Thursday, Mike North is a smart, down-to-earth fellow with a Chicago-guy voice and excellent guests. (Ex-Bear Gale Sayers will join him on Tuesdays during the NFL season). And while he's more likely to go off on a blustering tiradegreat one this week about the Cubs bringing up 20-year-olds ("You're in a pennant race, ya idiots!") and the White Sox being, well, dumb ("We got some serious problems on both sides of townit's call competency. Competency! And it's very important.")this guy tells you when you're an idiot. An added treat this fall for The Score is the return of company line snowballing on "The Dick Jauron Show" (Mondays, 6pm), featuring Coach Dick and the great Bears announcer Hub Arkush. And while you're not likely to get much from this showHub tries, but what's Dick going to say, "Yeah, we suck"?it's always great fodder for the next day's call in shows.

Extractions: Welcome Academics Student Life Alumni/ae ... Student By-Lines Taking Pride in his Work Building private school Webb into a football winner is the goal of this hard-nosed coach with the NFL background. By Brian Robin / brian.robin@latimes.com Oct. 10, 2001 His former Ironton (Ohio) High teammate, Coy Bacon, would have rubbed his eyes in disbelief, then shaken his head in disgust. His former Chicago Bears teammate, Dick Butkus, would have looked for someone to dismember. All Dan Pride could do was look for a way out of his first Prep League coaching gig. Players going in more directions than a hokey-pokey player on ecstasy. Playbooks that resembled out-of-control mathematical equations or road maps gone berserk, with enough trick plays to please James Bond. This is what awaited Pride when he took over the Webb football program in 1989. None of this would do. Not at all. "I looked at it and said, 'How can I get my kids involved without having to go through all this technical stuff?' " he said. "What we would do is snap up our chin straps and go straight at people. The more we did it, the more I noticed the kids wanted to hit more. "I believe that running the ball at people instills a certain amount of toughness. This is a sport that's based somewhat on intimidation."

Extractions: December 1999 Going, Going, Gone Part Three of a Series By Bill DiFabio I hate saying goodbye. It's so final. Saying goodbye to Pitt Stadium was oh, so difficult. Between Pitt Stadium and its onetime neighbor, Forbes Field, we're talking a lot of Saturday afternoons and many a bus trip for little Billy DiFabio. OK, raise your right hand if you had the pleasure to watch the Steelers play in Forbes Field, in Pitt Stadium and in Three Rivers Stadium. My right hand is raised. My neighbors thought I was a Bears fan. As a little tyke who loved going to see the Steelers play, I remember, and I have all the programs to prove it from days watching the Steelers play the Bears at all three places. I watched a rookie named Gale Sayers rip the Steelers to shreds at Pitt Stadium. Come to think of it, I liked the Bears. My next door neighbor's best friend was Doug Buffone. Thanks to my neighbor, I had a chance to meet with Doug, who played alongside Dick Butkus. Forbes Field was not a great place to watch a pro football game. Pitt Stadium? An ideal place, in my opinion, to watch both the pros and the collegians. "Not a bad seat in the house," laughed Andy Russell, who played in both Pitt Stadium and Three Rivers.
Extractions: August 2000 PSR's 2000 Small College Football Preview Area Teams Have National Playoff Aspirations By Tony DeFazio Associate Editor YOUNGSTOWN STATE PENGUINS If spring football is any indication, the Youngstown State University football team, which won 103 games and four national championships in the 1990s, could once again make some noise on the national level this season. The "Team of the 1990s" closed out the decade by making its sixth appearance in the I-AA championship game, losing to Georgia Southern, 59-24. Head coach Jim Tressel and his staff added 26 new players to the roster during the signing period. If the Penguins can get some quality snaps from these players, they can make up for the loss of 23 seniors and be in the chase for the Gateway crown and the school's 10th playoff appearance in 15 seasons. Defensively, it all begins with linebacker Tim Johnson, a nominee for D-1 AA defensive Player of Year. Johnson recorded an outstanding 221 tackles last season, second most in school history, to go with five interceptions and three sacks. LBs Bob Sivik and John Tekar (Wilmington) should see more time this year. Justin Dellarose and Chris DiMauro are young players to keep an eye on this fall. Senior Luke Schumaker will move from linebacker to defensive end. Defensive tackles Matt Mechling and Bryan Hawthorne both were named to the Gateway All-Newcomer team last season and will team with Montrial Thomas, Gary Quivers (Charleroi), and Todd Blackwell (McKeesport). LeVar Greene developed into one of the top CBs in the league last year, as he picked off four passes and defended seven more. Ed Blizzard will handle the other side, and Bruce Hightower returns at strong safety with Fon Nanji (Woodland Hills) at free safety.
